Capt.
I extended a hand to Patrick. I contacted him privately telling my tale of my father living in an assisted living facility for 13 years due to head trauma and finally passing away. I was genuinely being sympathetic. Capt.,
It's just a wrong way to show sympathy.
It was about you rather than about Patrick.
Please google on how to display a genuine sympathy.

Yury, you clearly have very little experience showing empathy, sympathy, and belonging. Sharing a similar experience is often very comforting to a person, to know that what they've gone through is not unique to them. People often think "no one can know what I'm experiencing", and find it a great relief to find that there actually are others that do.
Leave your google psychological expertise to those who actually do this.

For some people sympathy is natural.
Other people need to learn it.
For example I would not want Capt. or Ken M expressing their sympathy to me in a way they believe it should be done.

He looked back at a time when his limbs were lithe, his heart soared with possibilities. The walls glowed, beckoned. It was a joy, a treasure, a fiction. It warmed him on that foggy shore. Keep it shiny.

Patrick's a good sh#t in my book. Stuff wasn't pretty in Ireland when he and I spoke on the phone a few years ago. He's got the best kind of heart and probably needs friends now more than ever, and also probably reads this thread. Lots of people here know each other only through this forum, and have known each other for a long time.
Be nicer.

Patrick is a good dude, maybe a little weird-- but what climber is not?
I sure hope he returns to this shrinking campfire.

We've all got sh#t, and if it helps him to share his, ok. Maybe it helps us to hear it. Maybe not.
People's brains work the way they do, maybe differently than mine or yours. His brain wasn't one that rubbed me the wrong way, but if it did you, well that's how your brain works. Wishing him (and you) well!
