I've got some basic questions about starting, structuring and managing a non-profit. I've done a bit of research online but it sure seems easier if I just talked with someone that actually knows a thing or two. Is there anyone around here with direct experience in the field of non profits? If so and you'd be willing to answer a couple questions for me, please email me at mikeylikesrocks@gmail.com. Thanks!

Would be hard to answer this question without knowing where you live. That's because the legal profession is licensed by state and we can get into a lot of trouble by practicing law where we're not licensed.

I recommend getting a referral for an attorney in your area.

You might be surprised to know that you can get top-notch advice through the Small
Business Admin. They have a program that matches you with, usually retired, mentors
in your business field and geographic area. The price is right, too! :-)

Yes, it is called SCORE, and has retired small business people who volunteer to mentor. They will match you with someone who is a good fit. And yup - it's free.

Nolo Press has a good book about non-profits. Most of what you are dealing with is the 501(c)(3) aspect, if that is what you are going after. That is Federal law, and is the same everywhere. Forming the entity is the easy part, that is state law.
