I've been gone for a bit...

I feel like Ed Bannister does.

My question is, "WHERE DID YOU GO?"

Tell us and it will help clean the sewers here in Taco City.

I've noticed less climbing and climbers posting here in the few years since I started following and posting on ST. But while climbing posts come and go, the older generations of climbers naturally wanes. I love the format here, but miss the old timers and others who've left here.

I stopped climbing when the pain outweighed the motivation, but the longing never left me. I post here because I still relate to the mindset of the climber's heart, or at least my interpretation of it. This is what I try to convey in some of my poetry and rambling writings.

If You Have To Ask

Among early loves we found
The freedom of the hills
A steadfast lifelong passion
Driving early morning conflicts
Inside our minds
Between love of comfort
And the wildness we have seen

Around every unknown corner
Beyond every new ridge
Across each wide horizon
Around every rising buttress
At the base of every mountain face
Up every icy gully
Along each winding staircase ledge
This strangeness has spurred us

Welding our curiosity
To a dream of what would be
Or undaunted fascination
With the trails, the routes, the cracks, the holds
And unfolding panoramas
Unspeakable or unnamed
To each becomes a choice or calling

A profession, sport, or hobby
To each a chance for
Encounters with perfection
Or chapters to
Inform our mental conversations
And interpretations
Of the natural world

My crag is under 10 feet of snow. The skiing on Donner Summit is really good, however.

Mouse, we have sewers here? Really? I see it just running down the streets.

On a positive charge, yes climbers are climbing ice and rock right now. Could you call heliskiing, half and half?

I have climbing guests today from out of town. Does this count? May give a TR. Late, lynnie.

I've always been more lurker than poster, but a new job and a desire to get out and do stuff has kept me almost entirely offline and away from screens the past few months... And I don't miss what I've "given up."

Let's Keep It As Raw & Natural As We Can.

Upon the Jersey mountains that's where I made my stand
Now lost in Connecticut it's a big small Rock hell.
So upon these chossy blocks is where this climber dwells
The crisp days of spring-time will shortly tell
If there are any other climbers here about
Young, old, strong or not,
there is lots of rock
Will any who don't need it
cleaned & bolted step up?
'Cause where I climb, here, it's not.
that's just how I roll.

Zinke is an avid outdoorsman, and the department’s home page boasts a large photo of him fly-fishing. His Medium post included a photo of him standing outside Glacier National Park with his wife, Lola. On Thursday he wrote about one of his favorite memories hiking on public lands. He recalled that he suffered a painful mishap while trying to impress his future wife near the military base in California where he was training to become a Navy SEAL.

“I was trying to show off some rock climbing skills I had just picked up training with the SEAL teams, but lost my hold and I broke my ankle,” he wrote. “I did what any guy would do in my situation: I stood up and kept on hiking, surely messing up my ankle a bit more. Lola and I finished the hike and I didn’t collapse in pain, but the bigger accomplishment was I won Lola’s heart.”

Supertopo is something like:

10% Good/New Climbing Content and interesting threads
10% Excellent Stories and Trip Reports from the past
20% People screaming at each other over climbing ethics
60% People screaming at each other about politics

This really seems to be the reputation of this site in the community, right or wrong.

I'm not trying to say that politics aren't important, or that ethics aren't important (they both are). And I'm sure there have been some productive and cordial political/ethics threads on this forum, but these are the exception and not the norm. The manner in which things are discussed on this site puts off quite a few climbers who might otherwise join in. Some of you are alienating folks, and the only benefit you get is to vent steam, seemingly without ever REALLY changing anyone's mind on politics. I wonder if it is worth it, or if people should find other more productive and effective outlets to voice their political beliefs. This is directed at BOTH camps.

Just my two cents.

The statement "60% People screaming at each other about politics" can easily end up in the 60% category. There's a catch to everything, to every single of your statements. If it matters to you, delete this post and post something climbing related. Unless you're a troll, if you're a troll, then you're doing the right thing and will soon have the chance to quarrel with someone over ST politics...
