Hi, Butch Farabee here. Am looking for Neal Olsen who was hurt on El Cap on Sept 23, 1972. I was a ranger in the park at that time and was involved in that rescue. Am finishing up a book on Yosemite Search and Rescue and I describe the incident, since it was quite a significant one. I wish to see how his leg healed up and if Neal went back to climbing?? Trying to bring the story of this SAR full circle. Thanks... butch

Neal's leg healed up no problem and he was an active climber up until last year when he had a debilitating stroke. Unfortunately, he now needs a cane to walk and has little use of his right arm. His mind is still good, but life is a bit difficult for him now. Just took him out for drinks and dinner Saturday night.

Make sure you mention in the book that Neal had a fair supply of his own brand of pain medication(?!?!) with him on the climb and even offered some to Bridwell when he rapped down to rescue him.

I remembered a story Neal once told me....
Neal got called up in the draft for the Vietnam War and understandably he didn't want to go. His family had a history of high blood pressure and sure enough when he went to take his physical he failed due to his blood pressure.
But the Army didn't give up that easily. Before they officially declared him 4-F(unfit for service) he had to come back to be retested. During this second test they put him in a room for a few hours by himself supposedly so he would calm down and so would his blood pressure.
Neal caught onto this quickly and spent the next two hours in the room doing jumping jacks and pushups and pounding the wall with his fists. He failed the second blood pressure test as well!
