DMT, the leading ST chronicler of the waters of '17.

On another note: Lake Oroville is projected by Roy Spencer to breach it's emergency spillway level by 8 am this morning. Any one heard of evacuations from Oroville or other communities downstream?

Hard to believe, but as of yesterday the Shasta Reservoir was 96% full, 7 feet below the crest. Man, all the times I've driven down to Cali and passed that almost empty lake with its beached boat docks ........ incredible it can fill like that.

Here's a link to a California government daily level report: https://www.usbr.gov/mp/cvo/vungvari/daily.pdf

Looks like the Oroville Dam breached the emergency release level shortly after 8 this morning. Could get interesting. KCRA has live shots.

It was 80 degrees in Denver, yesterday.
Also, the Ouray Ice Park closed yesterday because of warm temps, and deteriorating conditions.

It was also 80 degrees yesterday in Palm Springs.

Granted SoCal hasn't been anywhere near as rainy as farther north, but it's still been pleasantly rainy. My sweetie and I wanted a warm weather break so we did a day trip to Palm Springs. Josh was another option but the forecast was a bit windy.
We did a nice hike in the Indian Canyons. The Stone Pools were deep and beautiful, and people thrilled by the heat were submersing themselves in the water.
Came home to cloudy conditions and the rain started again by 5 PM, rained steady all night.

Sorry to have missed you on your jaunt past my place into the Pah Rah Range Jonny. Did you make it all the way up to your property?

Went out to the Selenites and points beyond today. The road to The Sphinx parking area is rough, but passable. Just patchy snow on the north exposures on the approach. Might be going up tomorrow with Jack and Alex. Sphinx south face and the Obelisk should be decently warm.

On another note; the big hammer of God presently seems to be Oroville Dam. With no chance of repair till the dry season, and with more wet weather and spring snow melt looming, how long can the damaged spillway and emergency spillway last before the earthen dam itself is compromised to the point of catastrophic failure? How many millions of people's properties, businesses, critical transportation arteries, etc, downstream would be destroyed in such a disaster? If I was in Oroville I'd have my bags packed and loaded and escape routes out of harms way scoped out. Ditto with lots of Sacramento and beyond neighborhoods.

wow.. what a poorly designed emergency relief spillway.

http://www.sacbee.com/news/state/california/water-and-drought/article132332499.html

Officials warn of “imminent failure” at Oroville Dam’s emergency spillway

4:45 p.m.

Officials are warning those living downstream of Lake Oroville’s dam to evacuate because of a risk that the dam’s emergency spillway could collapse.

“They have what they expect to be an imminent failure of the axillary spillway,” said Mike Smith, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “What they’re expecting is as much as 30 vertical feet of the top of the spillway could fail and could fail within one to two hours. We don’t know how much water that means, but we do know that’s potentially 30 feet of depth of Lake Oroville.”

The Department of Water Resources, which operates the dam, said in a 4:42 p.m. Twitter post that the emergency spillway could fail within the next hour.

Its not the dam. Its to the side of the dam. But it covers 30 feet of lake height. Here is a pic of the situation.

http://www.kcra.com/article/evacuation-orders-issued-for-low-levels-of-oroville/8735215

In below picture the dam is to the right. The main spill way is in the middle. It is concrete but is damaged about 2/3rds way down. the emergency spillway is to the left.
