That name opens the floodgates of time, and memories come pouring in.

The Don Bowie I knew had nothing to do with climbing, but fifty years ago a young man with that name took me in as a little brother when I was even younger than him and headed in a million wrong directions.

He wasn't a saint, but he somehow kept me from making a lot of the really stupid mistakes I was trying to make as a young teenager.

I reckon he's gone now, but I think of him every day, and thank whatever forces govern the universe for bringing us together.

Sorry for the thread drift -- the Don Bowie I knew never tied on to a rope in his life, but he saved my life.
