Half Dome summit register box, original, one of a kind,1955. Has names written and scratched onto surfaces. Made of cast aluminum, very sturdy. Removed from service because of lightning hazard.
Please see photos.

At least they figured out what was causing lightning to strike Half Dome, and got rid of it.

That took care of that. Safety first.

Seems sort of blatant to steal the box and then try to fence it on ebay, and for $9000 to boot.

^^^^^ Yeah, you know he doesn't sell the gear he steals on eBay.

He stole it from the National Park Formerly Known As The Valley so shouldn't the Park
Service go after him?

I emailed the seller asking if they had documentation of legal ownership. Without providence the asking price is redic. This should be interesting.

This is the reply I got. S/he must have had a few questions along these lines, because they updated the ebay listing after I emailed.

"In response to questions:
For safety reasons, metal items were removed from Half Dome many years ago, I think that was in the 1960s. Hikers and climbers have been killed by lightning strikes on Half Dome, that danger is greatly increased when metal objects are nearby. I found this item when an old gentleman was cleaning out his garage. I purchased this item for historic preservation, otherwise it probably would have gone into the trash dumpster. I would like to see that this historical register box is preserved in a public museum collection. I am donating a portion of the sale to Yosemite Conservancy because of the wonderful work they do in education and habitat restoration in Yosemite."

So, we know this is a bullshit response. So many things wrong here!

Would be difficult to prove it was stolen. But not much historic significance in that item. Hardly worth a few hundred dollars. The donation angle is a scam.

"Cast aluminum" Yeah, right. Does it actually say 'Half Dome Register' on it?

I emailed them this;

Wow cool little treasure you have there.

It's a little out of my price range but I'm interested in a chunk of the cables going up Half-dome.

If you ever acquire some, say a few feet, please contact me.

Thanks much

Mark

Offer them 10 bucks. It's for preservation purposes.

Wow, it is cast and pretty darn cool. It should be donated to the museum.

It says "sierra club" right on it. Has nothing to do with the nps.

Yeah, some of us can read, but if you steal my sh!t from my car in a national park it is still stealing.

How do you know it was stolen?

I love the answer that metal items were removed because of lightning hazard. When did they convert the cables, and the pipes and bolts supporting them, to non-metallic materials?

I know that the summit had no register when I first hiked up there in 1962.
