Hi all, I was due to do a trip to yosemite from the UK for the first time this year but unfortunately I broke my talus bouldering in june. I'm still eager to do the trip but need to replan for next year now :-( anyway, i want to book the time off work well in advance. I understand from 15th september it is possible to stay at camp 4 for a month. Will all the spaces fill up pretty quickly on 15th each year or is there availability on the campsite everyday if you queue up for it? Basically, is it worth making sure I'm there on the 15th to get a space or does it not really matter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes camp 4 will fill up in September. I would book a regular site at one of the pines for the first week or so. You need to do it the minute they become available online and just take what you can get.

Then you can relax knowing you have a site when you arrive and they are nicer than camp 4 anyway.

Then you can grab a site at camp 4 midweek when your pines reservation is up and you are already in the valley so it's easy to get there super early.

The big news for C4-ites is that within a year (proposed plan) there will be new acreage in which to pitch tents, the grounds will have expanded to nearly Swan Slab, and there will be four showers and a new parking plan, with one entrance, all gas station parking consolidated into the single space.

Pinky, the NPS person in charge, assures me of this intent.

Whether or not it's finished, the NPS wants to alleviate the lines at night, which are a Pain of Giant Proportions for late arrivals.

Hope for the best.

For now, all old guidelines still apply.

There was a film crew about in the Valley this last week working on the Tom Frost doc.
All praise to Tom for his heroic work at C4!
It seems to be breaking ice and warming the tentacles of the NPS' heart.

It is the only legal ground bivy in the valley, despite the unenforced rule that you are not allowed to line up before 6 am. As the camp of last resort the late night line is going to remain.

I think part of the question is whether Mr. Gavin needs to get a site on the 15th or otherwise be screwed. The answer to that is no, sites will open up day to day before and after the 15th and you will get one through the usual pre-dawn line up. Fet's suggestion is a good approach.
