I want to park at Tenaya trailhead at night, sleep for a few hours and start climbing early. It seems stupid to pay for a campsite just to have to get up even earlier and probably sleep less because of loud neighbors. Is there a window of time when all the Rangers are off duty and would leave me and my van alone? 10pm to 5am? I'm not trying to skip out on paying my fair share. I always re-up my anual national parks pass and often do pay for camping. I'm also aware that if every climber rolled up every night to every popular climbing trailhead around the world it would create a problem. So I'm asking here, what's the local ethic and how do the cops respond to it?

Having been tooled, while sleeping in my car, at 3am, I would say the answer is no.

I'd say you have a pretty fair chance of being caught sleeping in your van , especially in Tuolumne . You could be asked to leave or ticketed , or just a verbal warning . It really is a roll of the dice .

Roger that. Been there, done that, except off Glacier Point road many years ago. Not fun having to get out of the park in the early morning hours.

I concur that stealth camping in any parking area has a low chance of producing a good result.
The National Forest Service maintains several low-rent campgrounds along Rte 120 east of the park entrance. (I think Burch's map points to one of the closest of these.)
They are pleasant, and often have space available even in "high" season (first come, first served - no reservations). Presumably the ones nearest to the park entrance fill soonest.
The catch is that it's a 30+ minute drive from there to Tenaya Lake trailhead. The good news is that between the hours of midnight and 6am, you can achieve a much better average speed on Park roads than is otherwise possible / safe / tolerated.

Based on what I've witnessed happen to someone else than me, the ranger won't even interrupt your sleep (at 7am), but you WILL find an expensive ticket on your windshield when you awake. :-)
Hard to believe someone other than a troll would ask this on the world wide internet.
edit - good question for general education...

Not sure what "tenaya trailhead" you mean, but get a wilderness permit and camp 1 mile from the road and 4 miles from the Meadows and you are legal and stress free.
Or camp down 120 as mentioned.
Rangers are on duty 24/7 and will bust illegal campers. I wouldn't get a good nights sleep doing that.
