i know its hard not to, but in the instagram age, if you plan to climb covertly without permits in restricted areas, dont start a facebook page website telling everyone about first.

for sure, clandestine routes under the radar of the authorities is a big part of the game, no problem there, but unlike the 'good old days' reactions from the said authorities are often no longer a slap on the wrist. the climbers who come after, and for those who may have already put decades of time, risk and money into navigating these places, please consider the results of your actions.

in this age, to not know is to have failed in your research. youthful folly is no excuse, its not the 80s, Cesen, Potter and Fowler you are not. if you are sponsored, those who pay your bills may not appreciate the connection, nor may those who actually do cough up their unsponsored cash only to have their permits rendered worthless.

to go covert, poach routes, compete for FAs is all good and at the heart of the game, just please do so with some tact and integrity thats not at the expense of others. and try to resist facebooking about it until you have a result.

ah yes, i overlooked that; the environmental impact.

some of these places are restricted exactly because they dont recover well from having groups living in them for weeks. even the most ardent redneck anti-ecologist can see fragile alpine places are easily screwed with by leaving holes full of sh#t, disturbed water courses and trails across scree.

Yes, if you want to poach, pirate, or do a stealth FA, please remember:

The other side of the freedom coin is self-responsibility. If you poach a peak or work a route, leave every step cleaner, sweeter, better, more pristine, than you found it.

You are doing this because you believe in yourself and freedom. Show how much you have earned and deserve that freedom in your every action. Now stop reading this and go climb something. :)

And keep on having entirely too much fun,

Passive aggressive vague-posting is up for the 2016 Yawnzy award.

Sh#t Burchy I don't like you but that one is SO classically funny. Still laughing my ass off.

Cheers to you,

hey there say, feralfae... as to this quote:

And keep on having entirely too much fun,
feralfae

it reminds me of your doug:

and his "laugh robustly" phrase...

though, a different form of fun, :)
i always knew he was 'on a roll' when he shared that, here...

Hi Neebs, just sent a PM to you, check your mail. Thank you for the lovely card.
Yes, Doug loved to laugh robustly at the foibles of humans, including his own foibles. I often think the best way to approach most human actions is with indulgent humor. We might as well laugh. We are an hilarious species.
And of course the "keep on having entirely too much fun" was his long before I began to use it. :)
I'm still picking blueberries on the tundra this week. Entirely too much fun.
