Heading down to the Bishop area for a few days. Just wondering if there are any good camping options with Labor Day weekend coming up. Have to kill a few days while trying to get a wilderness permit and all trailheads are booked.

Not sure what hike we will get but have about 10 days to spend in the Sierra's.

FYI - The Pit is usually closed until Labor Day weekend. Check out Horton Creek Campground for a BLM camp close to town. Otherwise, lots of Forest Service campgrounds up Bishop Creek (along 168 and South Lake Rd) or free primitive camping in Buttermilk Country and Pine Creek.

There are a lot campgrounds around here to choose from, free and pay.

On the valley floor, there's Pleasant Valley, Horton Creek, Baker Creek, Portagee Joe, Millpond....

Up Bishop Creek is where I'd go first if you want a campground rather than just head out into wild and set up your own on Forest Service dispersed camping. There are a ton of campgrounds up Bishop Creek. I'd check out the Willow Campground on the South Lake Road.

For the full tour- head up to the White Mountains and try the Grandview Campground.

Another option in the general area: Horseshoe Meadows out of Lone Pine.

Use the Trail Pass trailhead to go wherever you want in the area. There is no quota, you can always get a permit without delay. Miter Basin is not to be missed! Over Crabtree pass into the crabtree area below whitney, then circle around back through Siberian Pass, Little Whitney Meadow, up to Tunnel Meadow, then back over Trail Pass. Outstanding views and terrain, particularly once you get off the JMT.

Labor day is just a bad time for the trade routes......

I hope you get into the back country before Friday, none of the pay campgrounds will have open sites come Friday night. I'd rather sleep up In The milks anyways...
