Angela Donini emailed me the following information of interest to share on this thread.

I logged on today and saw someone is hoping Jim will chime in on Patagonia trekking. Thanks for providing the reason why not. However, I have traveled a little with Carolyn McCarthy who writes the Lonely Planet Guides to Patagonia (and Colorado and Utah) so I can recommend her verification of the sights and practicalities.

The Argentina Patagonia guide is brand new and the Chilean version was published a year ago. The research was just the previous year, in fact I ferried her car from Chile Chico to Chacabuco while she and a couple of other guides did the big trek (that Jim did in 10 hours and that Karla and I did in 2 days). She lives on the side of the Calbuco volcano that erupted last year. So my recommendation would be “buy the Lonely Planet guides, the author has the Donini seal of approval.”

Well, one time down there in lieu of flying back to BA from Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia, I hitchhiked, so if you don't like the airlines you can try that option... I can't promise that it'll be safer than flying, however, and it's unlikely to be faster, even if you have to weather a few cancellations. Or you could take a bus. Or walk. Coolest would be to ride a horse. I hope to do that someday.

That reminds me. Did any one mention to read Gregory Crouch's book? It's a pretty good resource (at any rate, it's good for a stoke). Take note though: the summer weather does seem to be getting warmer and more stable since those days.

Thank you, Gregory and Yanqui! What's the title of Gregory's book?

Thanks also to Radical for the itinerary and the stoke.
