Camp gas can usually be found in large grocery stores, if you are referring to this type of gas:

Yes, In the Bay area proper, you pass thru many large towns, but getting off the freeway to find a store can be a hassle and a time sink. The easiest place to stop without diverting is Oakdale. 120 passes right thru the main drag and you will go by places where you can buy supplies. After Oakdale the towns are small.

If you are starting at SFO, not San Francisco, you are starting in the town of Millbrae, 17 miles south of SF. If you want food supplies there is a large Safeway (big grocery store chain) and a Trader Joes, right across from each other in downtown Millbrae, a few blocks from the airport.

If you are starting from SFO, your direction finding will probably take you south on 101 to the San Mateo Bridge (92) to start your journey. A couple of exits south of this junction on 101 in San Carlos, there is an REI right off the highway exit. You can get most "camping" supplies and a fair amount of climbing supplies there.

I'll second the Oakdale option. The last decent sized grocery store with all your needs.... including the gas canisters. Also a pretty good Mexican place just down the street.

The key info is leave the Bay Area by noon to avoid afternoon traffic...

I used to leave San Jose on Friday night at 6:00 p.m., bound for Yosemite, and would be still stuck in Bay Area traffic at 10 p.m.

I knew there was a reason I don't live in California anymore....

Yeah, Sierra Ledge Rat, I find that "Bay Area Traffic" now persists on US 120 until the turnoff south to US 99 diverts the bulk of it toward Fresno etc. All those people must be commuting into the South Bay to work from the Central Valley housing projects on a daily basis. Think of their pathetic lot, getting up in the green light of dawn each morning to begin the grim commute into the Golden Triangle or the 680 manufacturing belt! Wonder how many will die of heart attacks and strokes before they reach 50? Does HEW keep those kinds of grim statistics? Rather doubt it.

Next year, the East Side, if I live that long. Bouldering shoes, fly rod, and camera - back to basics!

The last reasonably sized supermarket is in Groveland, but prices will be higher, so I would get almost everything in Oakdale, and save Groveland for a few perishables. Even then, if you have good coolers, you don't need to. I am assuming you are going 120.

If you are travelling from the Bay Area in the afternoon, try to get as far out of the Bay Area as possible before you start shopping. There is also an REI in Dublin just off Highway I-580 which is farther along your route. But if you don't need to stop there, skeedadle past Livermore ASAP since that is a time suck in the afternoons. There is a Costco with the cheapest gas in Tracy; there is also a Trader Joe's just off the Freeway in Tracy as well.

Have fun!

Oakdale has Gross Out (grocery outlet) too. Cheap groceries and ice for your cooler.
