In cases like this, people like Scruffy who are in good shape physically, and have a cheerful disposition tend to do much better than expected. I have two friends who made full recoveries from strokes, just takes a little patience.

I had a nice visit with Steve at Valley Medical today. He had been visited by Mike Bolte. AmyJo was there for a long time just before me. Alexey came after I had had a good long visit. Steve is enjoying the posts on Supertopo. He may get transferred to another facility in a day or two. There were flowers there from John Godar and Susan Godar.

I read him a few of the posts from this page of this thread through Jaybro's and eeyonkee's posts and he appreciated the humor.

Sorry. Sorry. If I gave the wrong impression with the thread title.
I wanted to make sure it got attention - but not that way.
My Sincere Apologies if it caused you to get the wrong idea.

This afternoon SBM was cheerful and communicative and inventive.
Anything he couldn't pull up with words, he wildly pantomimed.
Laughing a lot.
It's amazing: You can feel the good energy beaming into that stark
very white room.

Mike Bolte gets major points for all his time with the the poor car including major bagging duty,
as well as for being on the spot witness/advocate

Stephen McCabe - the flowers are beautiful.
And there were other flowers. I didn't see the card although I know Steve did.
Thank you.

Friends who visit: YAY. MANY thanks. All that good talk is definitely part of the process that will lead to reclaiming normal speech

ONCE I KNOW THE ADDRESS WHERE SCUFF IS BEING BROUGHT TO - oops - I WILL HAPPILY POST IT.

Good night.

What a shocker this is!
So glad to hear you're getting back to good, Scuffy.
And it looks like you dropped a few pounds since this photo was taken...

Wishing you all the best,

Offwidth sickos can recover from anything.
I've seen guys who could barely walk after doing battle with some evil maw, who just came back for more the next day!! Sick bastards..

Jeez Zardoz, you think he'll digress to the point where he has to become a lawyer?

I hope Steve recovers fully and quickly. His brilliant insights and scathing wit are important to his friends, and to the climbing world in general. Steve is fun to climb with and funny as hell

Steve is happy to see visitors , have strong spirit and show amazing recovery since placed in the hospital. Also he like to talk about climbing and remember the routes names better than I do

Update! Picked up Steve and delivered him to a nursing home/rehab unit in Santa Cruz. They insisted on wheeling him out from Santa Clara Valley in a chair, but he was fully capable of walking on his own. Had a good chat (still takes a while to get most sentences finished with several alternative words tried and it takes a bit of a toll on Steve) on the way down and got him settled in.

is the new place. He has really enjoyed visits from friends. Be great for them to continue. He can access ST via his phone and I think it has really been nice for him to get all the good wishes.

Every time I've been in an offwidth I've been at a complete loss for words. Sounds like he's well experienced and equipped to deal with his current challenges.

Consider wintering in a sunnier spot, say Moab. The vibes alone will bring you back to full function.

I guess there is a plus to becoming aware of this a bit late....

It's very good to see you making it to the home stretch, Scuffy!!

Thank you Amyjo & Mike

Hey Steve,
I've been "away" for several days. Sorry to hear of your difficulties and very very pleased to see you are out to rehab.
One more offwidth to methodically overcome, which I'm certain you will.

Good luck on the recovery.
A friend of mine suffered a series of strokes about 5 years ago due to blood loss after he had an aortal rupture. The docs fixed his heart but he was left with some physical and mental impairments.
Trevor had to re learn how to read, write, and play the guitar. With lots of effort he made major progress and is now doing quite well though not up to previous levels. His climbing has suffered greatly due to impairments and partial loss of feeling in his foot and leg.
If Scruffy is interested in communicating with Trevor he can e mail me.
