The trouble with being on the east coast and being away from my computer for the evening is that by the time I read some responses to my earlier posts they are already several pages of posts behind. However, despite extending a somewhat off-thread sub-discussion on a non-climbing topic--the Second Amendment, I do want to respond to comments by John, blah.., and Ken on this topic. It is far from clear--in fact highly unlikely, that the Framers intended that "arms" in the Amendment was meant to include all weapons, as that definitely wasn't the case in 1775 or 1789. Militiamen (and they were men) were required to have personal weapons--usually muskets, as part of their militia obligations. But, while I don't know for sure, it is extremely unlikely that any individuals owned cannons or other forms of artillery, nor were the expected to do so. Most such weapons were in the control of the regular army (the British in 1775), and any that did belong to militia units were kept in central locations such as arsenals, blockhouses, etc., as were most other military stores including most of the gunpowder supply. The Redcoat foray to Lexington and Concord in April, 1775 was not to disarm individuals but to seize such central militia 'stores' in those communities. (Current scholarship indicates that the true 'target' was to retrieve some cannon that had been 'liberated' from a British garrison a few months earlier and were believed to be hidden in the area.)Given that context, I think it extremely unlikely that the Framers in any way expected that individuals should have personal ownership of the 'high capacity' weapons of the day or that they were giving a 'carte blanche' for those of the future. It is worth noting that in 1786-7,as the Constitutional Convention was underway, the area where I live was embroiled in Shay's Rebellion--a violent protest by Revolutionary War veterans--really a class-conflict, during which the Massachusetts militia stopped an attack by the rebels on the Springfield Armory using cannon firing grapeshot (killing several of the attackers). This situation was very much in the minds of the drafters of both the Constitution and, a couple of years later, the Bill of Rights--not likely they would have thought favorably of the idea that such rebels should have cannon themselves. Anyway, enough of this, the weather is turning nice, so I'm about to 'play hooky' and head off to climb!!!!

I enjoyed this longish interview. It gives a somewhat different slant on the nature of what Christians should think about this election.

From RNS Religion News Service

http://religionnews.com/2016/10/05/who-should-christians-vote-for-theologian-miroslav-volf-makes-a-surprising-case-for-one-candidate/

As Christians watch 2016 burn, we must remember that fire both consumes and refines. That is, it forces us to return to what makes us who we are. For Christians, this means asking once again how faith and theology should inform our political thinking and engagement. Few thinkers are better qualified to explore this territory than Miroslav Volf.

He is Henry B. Wright professor of theology at Yale Divinity School, director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture, and co-author of Public Faith in Action: How to Think Carefully, Engage Wisely, and Vote with Integrity.

RNS: I want to get to these issues. But first, make your best case for the candidate you think Christians should vote for.

MV: The best case to be made for Hillary Clinton is that on balance she better represents the convictions and character that should concern Christian citizens. No candidate is perfect. There are certainly areas where Secretary Clinton’s policies and record might give Christians pause. But she takes the threat posed by climate change seriously. Her policies, such as paid family leave, would actually strengthen American families. She is committed to a just and welcoming approach to immigration that does not unduly compromise the legitimate good of security. She supports major reforms to America’s overly retributive and racially-biased criminal justice system. And, perhaps most importantly, she has demonstrated much deeper commitment to supporting the disadvantaged and the vulnerable than her opponent has, his grandiose rhetoric notwithstanding.

The second best case for voting for Secretary Clinton is Donald Trump. Mr. Trump is an exceedingly poor candidate whose public life has not demonstrated a single one of the moral virtues that are important for a political leader to have. Braggadocio is not the same thing as courage. His policy proposals, such as they are, range from half-baked to obviously incompatible with deep Christian convictions, such as the importance of welcoming the needy stranger, care for the non-human creation, and pursuing peace.

Once Hillary is president, Chump will slink away laughing his ass off at all the people he duped. He bragged right of the gate he would make money running for president, and has been funneling money to his businesses from the get go. He really doesn't want to win, it is just another one of his sleazy business deals.

Even most Republicans can't stand the buffoon.

“Our party's nominee this year is a man who makes a mockery of the principles and values we have cherished and which we sought to represent in Congress,” the group said in a statement.

“Given the enormous power of the office, every candidate for president must be judged rigorously in assessing whether he or she has the competence, intelligence, knowledge, understanding, empathy, judgment, and temperament necessary to keep America on a safe and steady course,” the letter continues. “Donald Trump fails on each of those measures, and he has proven himself manifestly unqualified to be president.”

Trump has repeatedly been stung by high-profile defections from Republicans, including military leaders and former administration officials from both Bush presidencies.

The letter from former Republican officials highlights those divisions at a key moment in the race.

“We are proud of our service in the United States Congress and proud that we served in that role as Republicans,” the letter states.

“It is in that spirit that, as Donald Trump’s unfitness for public office has become ever more apparent, we urge our fellow Republicans not to vote for this man whose disgraceful candidacy is indefensible. This is no longer about our party; it’s now about America. We may differ on how we will cast our ballots in November but none of us will vote for Donald Trump.”

Chertoff is on board with Hillary. Strange bedfellows, indeed.

Once A Clinton Nemesis During Whitewater, Now A Clinton Supporter
October 6, 20165:25 AM ET

It's hard to imagine a less likely Hillary Clinton supporter than Michael Chertoff.

Chertoff led the Republicans' 1990s probe into the Clintons' land deal, known as the Whitewater investigation — and that led to the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Clinton would later vote against Chertoff for other key positions requiring Senate approval.

In a dramatic turnaround, Chertoff just came out in support of Hillary Clinton for president.

"The reality is ... it's a binary choice. This is not, 'What is your best outcome in the world,' " Chertoff tells NPR's Renee Montagne. "It is: You have two people, and which of the two would be better as president? And I think presented in that way, it was pretty clear to me that I should publicly take the step of saying that I would be planning to vote for Hillary Clinton."

Not sure why that's such a shocker. Trump, however foolish, stands to interrupt their comfortable little world that despite the bickering, Chertoff is a part of.
