Thanks for sharing the story. Amazing that the buck missed his jump on your fence. I've seen them clear 6' fences with no problems.

Seemed like the deer had a dislocated leg joint. Took off at high speed even so. Good work.

Edit:
Leaving the deer in that distressed position till Control could get there would not have been my choice.

Yeah, i think he'd been there a while. Wasnt there yesterday, and just lucky our neighbor noticed. Its possible that his leg was dislocated, but it's kind of hard to tell because of how long he was probably there in that stretch position. He tried jumping over the fence a couple more times when I cut him loose and then relaxed a bit, and after a while he atually did make it over.

In any case, I don't have a way to evaluate a deer's condition in that kind of position, and figured the most important thing was to get him out of that distressed position. It was either that, or fresh venison chops. And the neighbors were watching. So in reality, I probably would have called Animal Control if had looked like the deer was in any real physical harm to me.

I think any decent person would have cut him loose.

Had dug himself quite a hole, but I'm guessing he'd have been more slow to exfil if he had hung there most of a day? MOI would suggest poss coxofem luxation, but agree that just muscle fatigue and reduced blood flow from his dependent position might be why he was gimping.

Nice quiet work, j-rig.

(ETA: even with a dislocated hip, most animals that can forage and avoid predation can build up enough scar tissue to give them reasonable ROM fairly quickly.)

Good effort.
If you involved DFG they might have just dispatch him on the spot.

Good job, jonnyrig!

So how do you think that happened?

I'm having a hard time visualizing that. You've got the fence and the video cam and the youtube acct. You like to investigate, show us how you think that happened, help clarify it for us (with a tool or stick). Please. Thanks.

Jonnyrig was not cutting an anchor fence strand with diagonal cutters. Try that and you will see. He
was cutting a smaller wire strand fastening the fence to the horizontal member. That strand must have
been sticking up and the cloven hoof slipped through.

Stoopid deer should get a cell phone so it can call 911 and get help when in need.

That's the way to do it! Although in Montana, that sucker would have been relegated to the freezer I suspect. Well, at least in the 80's; maybe not now.

I think the deer tried jumping the fence, and somehow stuck the rear hoof between the chain links and the top rail, then naturally flopped. When that happened, it looks like (from the video, I'm sitting at the airport right now) it just fully entrapped that hoof. That wire was tight. I looked at first to see if I could just pull the weight off and unwrap it; but it was pretty obvious that wasn't going to happen, so I went in for the cutters (and the camera, of course).

I'm pretty certain everyone here would have done the same. At least it didn't happen while we were gone for a weekend, or some week-long business trip. Lucky for the deer. I'm pretty sure he'd be dead. Anyway, just a minor thing I thought y'all would appreciate. Let's hope he doesn't go jump in the freeway.

I hope yer not 2nd-guessing yourself. You did the right thing. A critter was helpless, you helped it. Period.

My wife, as others here I'm sure, were wondering, "Why not call animal control to help the leg".

Always easy to 2nd guess, after you sip coffee and watch it on yer computer. Yeah, the leg looks damaged as he ran off. Little buck might even make easy prey for a hungry cougar.

So what? You did your job and helped the hapless jumper. Waiting for "animal control" in your area may have meant you watching a young buck die in front of your eyes hanging from a fence.

You did good. You got some Karma points. Move on.
