Happy Birthday, Jim! And best wishes for more! I remember you being generous and welcoming to me in Yosemite in 1975 or whenever it was, and then being generous and welcoming to my son in Indian Creek 40 years later. Pretty amazing! Whatever you got, I want some too!

Definitely an inspiration! Happy birthday Jim, and thanks for all the hospitality you and Angela have shown Patty and me.

Edit: About 2 weeks ago, Patty and I spent Friday and Saturday climbing at Tahquitz. Sunday I need to take my GSP (dog) out for exercise and, well, I'm feeling kinda lazy. So I decide to go to this local dog park that I used to take Tica to for socialization when she was just a wild beast. So after humping a few dogs and playing a bit, then taking a short hike in the bush surrounding the park, we are heading out when I hear someone call my name. I turn around and I see Ron, this guy I haven't seen in maybe 6 years. Our kids were on the same swim team together so we had a lot of catching up to do.

He asks me if I still backpack a lot, and my response is not so much any more. Patty really hated it. So now we are rock climbing and Patty really enjoys it. His eye kind of glaze over thinking back to another time; "I took a rock climbing class of sorts once". He goes on, "Back in the mid to late 70's a buddy and me went to the Tetons and the Climbing Ranch to do some climbing". This old guy ran the ranch and had been up the "final exam" route to the top many many times. He had told Ron that he was very sorry he couldn't go with them this time, but he had too much to do. Instead, the best climber in the U.S. was to guide them up to the top. Apparently this guy climbed like a fly, just sticking to everything while soloing up the hard stuff, then bringing Ron and his buddy up the easy stuff on rope. Ron went on to say, "This guys portrait was hanging up at the ranch right next to Kennedy's. His name was Jim Donini." "Donini?!", I said. "We know him. He's in his 70's now and still climbs like that". Ron gives me this incredulous look (that we've met him).....

Ron never followed up on climbing.

Thanks everyone! Luckily with the entirely different take we now have on aging I can safely say that.....73 is the new 71.
Did five miles uphill with 3,200 ft. of elevation gain today in 1 hr 30 minutes....my way of giving a robust middle finger to 73.

The one and only time I ran into El Donini he was barely thirty years of age and already an old man in my young perspective. Well the ensuing 42 years has destroyed that myth. Good celebration Donini.
