This is a unusual request. I am a deerhunter and have many tree stands. I want to add a life-line to each stand. Basically, I want a rope attached to the tree above the stand and the end of the rope attached to the tree near the ground. I want to be able to attach my safety harness to the lifeline and begin the climb up the tree while I slide the harness attached to the life-line up. I am trying to figure out what type of rope, the diameter, some information about how to tie the required knots.
Thanks, Tim

Call either company. They can sell you the rope, ascenders or rapell devices. Both are owned by freinds of mine.

deerhunter, another good source to check into for what you want is arborists and arborist supply houses. If you google Petzl Jumars, you should get a quick grasp of what we would be using, and 2 knots that will serve you well are the figure 8 and a Bowline.

This is an unusual request- I'm a deer and I'd like to know why people put out food and chemicals so they can lure me in to shoot me while hiding in a tree?

A gri-gri is pricier than a prussik knot, but it works as a safety ascender and also a rappel device. You would put it on the rope at the base, go up, and then rappel down without having to take it off the rope.

Lowering a jumar, or prusik, down the rope as you climbed down would not be nearly as convenient as rappelling.

You could keep a prusik knot safety on the rope above yourself, while you set up a rappel rig (carabiner brake, ATC, etc.) to your harness.

You would then rappel down, with the upper hand sliding the prusik knot down as you went, as a backup to the rappel.

There are lots of options.

I wouldn't want to be sitting in one of those tree stands, dozing off, without a safety line.

The more important gear is for setting the 3:1 system to get the keg into the tree.

^^^^^

If you need an entire beer keg, for just yourself, while waiting to blast a deer, you are waiting in the wrong place.

The 3:1 is actually better done as a small block-and-tackle to hoist the hind legs skyward, so that you can remove the non-edible parts before dragging the rest back to the hood of the car.

I don't even like to clean fish these days. The local rockfish pretend to be dead, and then suddenly jump back to life and drive their sharp fin spines into your hand.

Sneaky little guys, those lingcod.
