Just a shout-out to anyone thinking about doing the Beckey Route at Church Dome soon....this as#@&%e is at the base, living under the blackish rock to its left that makes a convenient belay seat.

Nice shot! I made nice by leaving him alone and giving him a wide berth. Never been so happy to get off the ground and onto a route in my life. And yes, I know snakes can climb rather well. It still just felt better to get off the ground!

This guy lives in my yard. He's not an as#@&%e and he eats ground squirrels who are. Glad to share my yard with Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes who are said to be the most docile of all rattlesnakes.

Both Northern and Southern are pretty chill. My lens was maybe 14" from
his snout and I do that quite regularly. That is definitely within his
striking distance but he knows a slowly advanced piece of metal and glass
isn't worth striking at. I really wanted to move that blade of grass just
in front of him but that was a wee bit too close. I came across another
Southern two weeks ago and stuck my iPhone within 6" of him. However, he
was stretched out straight and he was still quite chilled from the night.
YMMV!
Doughnut, your buddy has been eating well! He's really stout for his length.
Above Leavenworth, WA I came across a Northern that was 6', at least, and
probably 5" in diameter! Surely bigger than the supposed record of 64".
BTW, I think yours is a Southern. They're pretty similar but I've never
seen a Southern that stout.

Went to Church Dome and all we got was a pic of a rattlesnake?

Thanks Reilly, I don't know much about snakes and was told that the Northern Pacific was the most common in my area. I guess I'm just glad to share my yard with a docile variety of venomous snake. Anyone care to guess how many ground squirrels my friend might dispose of in a season. Probably less than my dog and more than my pellet gun.

Saw an Egret grab a gopher and chug it in one gulp at our dog park. And I always thought they were hunting frogs and lizards

Always good to see this kind of heads up so the next party isn't negligently and lazily stepping over a boulder only to take an ankle hit by a surprised rattler. Your good deed for the day has been done Curlie. We all appreciate it.
