Thanks for the info guys. Too bad about the wasps. My condolences to your ankle Cat.
Do you think there would be less wasps in the High Eagle area?

Normally, if it were just my own hide, I'd roll the dice and take my chances with the vampires, but since I'd like to take my 2 year old on an over-nighter, does anyone have any recent info on mosquito numbers and aggressiveness?

I was at the Lost Eagle/Melting Wall parking spot on Friday, July 14 at night. There we some mosquitos in the air, but they were not bad or aggressive.

Wondering about the smoke from the Detwiler fire. Can anyone chime in on visibility and breathability?

Thanks Climberdude, that's actually one of the exact spots I'm considering. If you don't mind one more question, how high was the river running? Any of the pools there soakable, or too much water? (I guess that's two more questions, but they can be answered as one, so I'll leave it.)

No problem. The pools are definitely soakable. You can easily jump across the creek in a few locations, but the pools are still full. To get to the Lost Eagle/Melting Wall parking area, you will now want a 4WD high clearance vehicle as there is a stream running down the section of the road from the Swimming Hole parking spot up to the Lost Eagle/Melting Wall parking area. However, if you feel your vehicle is not up to this, then it is just about 2/10 of a mile hike between the two.

The bugs are only bad at dusk at Lost Eagle area, I was up at High Eagle a couple days ago just to get to the lower camp site you need a 4x4 the road up there is real bad from last winters storms, 20 years ago I could get my Caravan up to Friend Rock camp site lol, the road to the Big Sleep area from the west out of North Fork is closed road washed out from winter storms so need to access it from the east side by Rock Creek off road 225, the smoke here today is gone and the fire fighters are getting the upper hand on the Mariposa fire great news!!! going to be hot here this week, most of the camp sites are closed around the Shuteye area do to dead trees, happy climbing Mike A.
