Simon McCartney's labor of love, "The Bond", chronicling his partnership with Jack Roberts, their ground-breaking first ascents of the North Face of Mt. Huntington in 1978 and the S.W. Face of Denali in 1980 (and subsequent epic rescue)is now available via Vertebrate Press in the UK! For you collectors out there, there are 200 signed, cloth-bound copies available until they run out. It has been a labor of love for me as well, digging through Jack's old photos, his copious journals of the climbs, even including a trip to Alaska and trip to the mountains! Through "The Bond" I have been fortunate enough to forge a strong friendship with Simon, Bob Kandiko, Mike Helms, and various and sundry other characters. Finally read the definitive chronicle of two strong, brash young climbers, and see great pictures never before published! Yay!!!!!!! :-)

Bump for Jack and Simon! :-) Looks like The Mountaineers will publish the American version, and will be available Spring '17, but without all the fabulous pictures. So I'd say (especially if you are a collector) get the UK version that I put the link to.......

Priced it out at $50 from the UK, shipped.
What's with the American version not getting all of the photos anyhow?

Stoopid Americans!
Heh.

I am delighted to report that The Bond is now published immediately available from The Mountaineers in Seattle. The north American edition is less costly and cheaper to ship. When I wrote The Bond it was America that I was thinking of. It was Jack's home, where I prefered to climb and it was where my old friend spent his life. The success of the book does ho honor.

Simon, congratulations on your book. I am a crag climber who avoids ice and snow but I loved it. My husband, who does all those snowy, icy things, loved it even more.

That photo of Jack Roberts on the Kihiltna Glacier wearing just his shorts and holding his axes up to the sky in either triumph or supplication, along with that Gaston Rebuffet shot on the needle, is one of the more impressive and memorable climbing shots I've ever seen. Link to buy books (they don't have this up on the site yet, but keep checking in): https://www.mountaineers.org/mountaineers-books

Thanks for the heads up.

I just finished reading this on the weekend, and it was brilliant. My only disappointment was that I read it on a kindle, so wasn't able to fully appreciate the photos. It's up there with Steve Bell's 'Virgin On Insanity' as one of the best alpine climbing books written in the last couple of years.
