Are reservations necessary? I plan on showing up on a Wednesday in the first week of August.

From east or from west? Yes and yes.
For west - ranger station at Road's End in Kings Canyon. Usually can get a walk in permit the morning of. It opens at 7, so be in line by 6:45am. Will likely be first and get the permit.
For the east, there is a Ranger Station in Bishop. Call them and ask. Walk in permits are available, but the TH is popular.

Yes, and I'd recommend the east approach.

West approach. Looks like the first week in August is already booked. Guess we'll have to get there early..

No walk-ins available? Normally they reserve a certain portion of the permits for walk-ins. Probably could see on line. East side mo betta anyway, although Onion Valley is popular there are many access points East side.

I think they give out like 30 walk-ins a day. That's why we gotta show up early...

So you got a plan A. That's good. Have a plan B too and you probably won't need it.

I've done the standard route a couple of times. A few years ago, a buddy and I went in to do it WITHOUT bear canisters--big bust. A ranger was actually waiting at a trail junction. Turns out if you're a PCT through hiker, you're allowed to go without a canister, but if your a climber with arguably more critical weight and space issues, you have to have the canister. Love that government! So you have two options: Bring a canister or camp at Charlotte Lake where there is a bear box, which is what we did. Not a bad option, really. Just get up really early and hammer out the last few miles with climbing gear and stuff for the day. We had no trouble making it back to camp with plenty of daylight left. Have a blast! Some of the best rock and views anywhere.

Watch out for the deer. They are way more of a problem than the bears. They get all gangsta when you try to hang in the their 'hood (if you bivy closer to the base).

HaHA! BITD, Leversee, who worked at Chouinard Equipment (now BD) at the time showed-up with a dam* spool of 1/8" stopper wire and we strung-up the Fish Haulbag with it. We were lucky. One could really just go out there without 'reservations,' forget about the permit, hike out there, stay a spell and just go climbing.

I enjoyed it in late September, post mosquito season. A grand day out. After Sept 22 no permit required (I'm pretty sure.)

The walk-in quote for Kearsarge Pass is 24. On a midweek you shouldn't have a problem. Pick it up at the Lone Pine visitor center. Opens at 8.

You'll be hiking by 9:30 and at Charlotte Lake by that afternoon.
Recreation.gov says the reserved spots are taken for Wed. August 3.

If I'm to get there early do you guys have a recommended bivy the night before between Fresno and the park? Hopefully closer to the park...
