Hi all!
I'll be heading down from Vancouver to Mexico around next October or November and I was thinking to stop for climbing along the way. What are the best places on the west coast for a sport climber travelling alone without a car? Something with an easy reachable (cheap) campground where I can meet some climbing partner? Thank you :)

hey there say, kukko...

say, zbrown is right, it will come...

first off, from me, the ol' gramma type:

if you have to travel alone:

send out:

1--'check-in messages' ...
2--location-stops, messages...
3--and, 'where you're going', messages'

and:
often!!!

Paging Big Mike.

That time of year is pretty iffy.

edit: I mean weather wise.

travelling alone without a car?

That is an interesting point. How are you planning to get around? The west coast does not have much in the way of mass transit. You pretty much need a vehicle.

edit: why are you going to Mexico? Not the safest place these days.

Paging Big Mike.

You rang? 😉

Travelling the wet coast without a car. That will certainly be an adventure!! Smith would be an obvious first stop. It's about ten hours south of van, and not super far off the I-5. Might be wet or even snowy at that time of year... I suggest going earlier if possible.

Not sure about any other "sport" climbing on your way south.. I'm sure there are some spots in northern Cali. If i were in your shoes, I would:

Climb a ton in Squamish this summer. Meet new people,(at the crag, gym's, and hit up the find a partner thread on squamishclimbing.com) and get familiar with trad climbing.

Find someone local who has transportation and is stoked about going to Mexico with you.

Go to Yosemite and climb some cool routes. Camp 4 is the place to hook up with people if you don't have a partner. There are even a few bolted routes there. A pilgrimage to the valley is a must for any climber.

There is a ton of climbing all over California. I'm sure you can find something that will fit your tastes.

Good Luck and have fun!!

If you can get to Bishop, check out the ORG. Not sure how the 395 public transport is that time of year though.

Tahoe?

Line up some partners just before and you'll be fine.

I certainly did. Figured you would have the best input based on your US travels. I'm not familiar with mass transit to climbing areas other than YARTS.

Eastern Sierra Transit on 395. Reno to Lone Pine. Not too pricey.

A year or two ago the Suse picked up two hitch hiking Brits in the desert south of Barstow. Definitely a bad situation. We got them to HV campground here in JT and later down to the bus depot in Palm Springs. Are you sure you want to take on the itinerary you suggest? Alone????
