Weaverville;
Trinity Wilderness in yer backyard,
no stoplights in town,
no jobs either unless you'll do seasonal bud trimming work.

Hey they got a blinking red in the Weave now. Only one in the county, tho.

How 'bout Portola, CA.
It's very cheap housing. No jobs. Good Mountain biking, hunting.... used to be good backcountry skiing and snowmo'ing. It's at 4900 feet, but haven't had much snow since 2011. Squaw Valley, Northstar, Alpine Meadows are all about 1 hour and 15 min. drive. So little climbing that's it's not really worth mention. About 90% of the whole county is forest service lands, good for gathering firewood, ha, ha, ha. There ain't no reason to move here.

Having owned a house in Portola, within walking distance of a tiny crag even, I concur!

haven't read all of the above, but how about Merced? Yea yea, high crime I hear, but small, close to Yosemite, new(ish) UC campus. I think things will be looking up there over time.

But personally (if I had money or house... ha) I would sell your Cali house and sit on the cash until Yellen if finally forced to raise interest rates.... at which point real estate prices will crash. Buy two for the price of one anywhere you want. :)

Next Sleeper town? I wouldn't tell for fear of it not being so sleepy anymore. The more remote and hush-hush, the better.

Armpit. Well, armpits smell better. Hot and cow crap smelly in summer, cow crap smelly in winter. While not far from Yosemite, it is also not that close either, so you are still burning a couple hours to get there and no decent local crag.

Maybe in a few decades the place will get enough business to displace the cattle, but til then I call armpit.

Apple Valley...

I got robbed by a hitch-hiker there. I spent Xmas at the "Green Spot" motel in beautiful Victorville.

You heard it here first!

Access to the best chimney climbing in the world. The chance to repeat some obscure Wyde routes of mine and put up new ones! Unclimbed, unnamed towers the size of Castleton....

Montrose, Co. Inexpensive housing and not far from Ridgway, Ouray and Telluride. Bozeman is a bit spendy.

Look at towns near the San Rafael swell and joes valley such as Price and castledale. Really cheap living with great recreation. Jobs are hard but close to Moab, joes valley bouldering and ice climbing, fishing hiking gun shooting. You get the point

Oh they're in Utah ,

Green River Utah would be really cheap and cool place to live as well

Green River, Utah?
One of the most depressing places i've been to in my life...had to unload my 140# raft and other goodies from my truck so I could sleep at night. My traveling partner was knocking on my door @ 3:30 a.m. asking if we could leave...
