Looks like I'll be loosing my job soon..really sucks as I've busted my ass off the past 26years working my up the ladder only to be one rung from the top and "poof"..they sell the ladder.
So my wife and I may be FINALLY moving out of Cali. Not 100% sure but looking likely.
What's the sleeper town were housing is cheap, some work to be had and plenty of outdoor fun options? Would like to get in before it blows up!
Right now we're talking Bend or Durango but both aren't so "sleeper" anymore.

Redmond, OR might be more of a sleeper town than Bend and is only 15-20 min from Smith and 20 min farther to Bachelor. The town itself isn't as trendy and hip as bend but still plenty of eating options and good grocery stores. And importantly it is cheaper to buy a home.

Going through the same thing. Lost my job last August and need to find a cheaper/more economical place to live but still has employment opportunities. Cali is way expensive.

What kind of employment?
EDIT: If you are in the medical or construction fields there are dozens of job openings in Cody, WY.
Thousands of boulders, hundreds of rock routes (sport, trad, multi) withing 15 minutes of town. Reasonably close to many destination type areas. Ice climbing is ok here as well.
Great schools, infrastructure, jet service etc.
It reminds me of Bozeman, 25 years ago, but with less people, a better tax structure and more accessible outdoor opportunities.

Prescott is great for rock.
On the edge,
Nice list.
Add Bozeman, Mammoth, Bishop, and Truckee.
If you like to surf - Davenport, Ca
15 min north of Santa Cruz. Good surfing in walking distance. Sleepy small town on highway 1 and weekend distance to the Valley.
Just moved to and building a house in Ashland, Oregon. :-)

What kind of employment?
My degree is in accounting. But I'm really good at any thing operations (outside of sales). -I'm not good at sales unless it's something I'm passionate about; climbing or hiking.
Although my official title is Controller, I've been groomed to run this $18MM manufacturing corporation since the day I started as a purchasing agent in 1990.
I'm not expecting to make the kind of money I make now. Just need something good to do.
My wife has an English degree, fluent in Spanish and has a background in customer service and graphic arts...along with her current employment in mutual funds for the past 17 years.
We may just start a couple companies of our own..

Housing prices headed upward but where aren't they?
Many cultural and sporting activities
Beautiful historical town
Small town ambiance with larger city cultural, social, and sports activities.

While still in Ca. I think North Fork may fit the sleeper town description. Very close to Shuteye, pretty close to Yosemite. Plus Flip Flop and TJI live there and they have the Buck Horn Saloon and an Ashram so you know there's a rich cultural seen.

I am finding Asheville, NC to be very nice. If you like craft beers, they got enough of them to keep you drunk for a while. If you like the Arts & Crafts design aesthetic, the place is steeped in it. Also some beautiful Art Deco elements on downtown buildings.
There are a few mountains round here...not like the Sierra, of course, but pretty in their way.
Some people do say "bring your own job," but I think this is meant toward the just above lower end of job type of thing.
Real estate is absurdly expensive though. It was a sleeper about 30 years ago, from what I gather.
