Sometimes I run across a book that reminds me why I love being a book reviewer. It's always a treat to 'find' good books that may not have a large public relation campaign and therefore may never get wide exposure. Jake ('I'm thinkin'…') is one of those books. This novel is startling in its simplicity yet powerful in its theme. These pages follow Jake Smith as he struggles to regain what's left of his life after being fiercely attacked by a bull. Losing the ability to speak and being subject to seizures makes each day difficult, but the determination of his twin sister, Jade, pushes him forward into the arena of life. Set among ranch hands and outdoors-type folk, this book has a casual, comfortable feel. It may take a little while to get adjusted to the author's writing style, with the use of Italics and capital letters at odd times, but there is a gem of a story to uncover. The anguish Jake experiences and the selfless love of his sister are heartfelt and sincere. The extent of Jake's injuries and his inner thoughts as he grapples with the changes in his body are sensitively shown through dialogue and actions. Readers are invited alongside Jake as he desperately tries to reclaim what the bull savagely stole from him. A variety of solidly presented emotions create the perfect amount of tension to keep these pages turning. The author's motivation for writing this book is not only to educate readers about the issues associated with head trauma injuries, but she also wants to make a tangible contribution. Most of the proceeds from the sale of these books will go to an organization that offers family camps for people suffering from the debilitating effects of these medical problems
