The (unpredictably) reliable msr xgk stove's 'flame spreader' can
corrode and crumble to dust if you are a inattentive cook like me and
allow boil overs every trip that drown the burner in NaCl soup.

I've used a stainless steel spoon as an emergency 'flame spreader' with good results after some modification.
