Fun fact about Volvo P1800 vs. Saab Sonett: Per ”Turbo-Per” Gillbrand started as an engine test engineer at Volvo in 1956. He subsequently becomes an engine development engineer, and helped develop the 4-cyl inline B18 engine for the P1800 in the early 1960’s.
In 1964 he was recruited by The Saab factory, located in Trollhättan only 80 km north of Volvo HQ in Gothenburg, and his first assignment was the development of the 4-stroke V4 engine for the Sonett, among others.
The B18 engine, followed by the B20, B21 and B23 with similar layout, became the backbone for Volvo Car’s engines for 30 years to come.
As his nickname suggests, Per has gone down in motor history not only for the B18 and the V4, but mostly for the adaption of the exhaust-driven turbo-compressor for practical use in everyday street cars.

I'm sorry for the reply to post #85 in this thread coming 15 months late, but this is not an Austrian "Geländewagen".
This is a Volvo "Personlastterrängbil" (Light Utility Terrain Vehicle) 903, civilian designation C202.
Nicknamed Volvo "Valp" (dog puppy) by the public.
About 10000 were produced for the Swedish armed forces, and also Norwegian army during the 60's and early 70's.
A couple of 1000 were also produced for fire and rescue brigades, and the national telephone and power companies.
This specific example belonged to the fire department in the county of Åtvidaberg in south-east Sweden. Obviously :)
Bonus info; Volvo used the 64-hp B18A engine för the Valp as well.

I'd like to know more about it, and maybe see it run on the track and have it critiqued in that environment.
The embellishments to the bodywork are pretty restrained in terms of tack-on aerodynamics, which is a nice approach.
It's refreshing that it's not all boy-racered out with ground effects and wings and stuff. Though I'm sure those things would help at speed.
I get what you mean about backsliding the design some, but that stretched look is all about getting it set up for the mid-engine treatment and probably largely unavoidable, given that goal.

What this guy said about it is quite laudatory:
About 16 minutes into this video, I've come to the conclusion, this man is a Master- Artist. This coming from a 69-year-old lifetime mechanic/technician. Excellent work, so much planning went into this. I don't know who the owner is but whoever commisioned this had "Deep Pockets". What a work of art. Thank you for sharing.

Kind of sad to think there may be a generation of kids that learn to ride self driving cars. Let alone, they may never know the importance of bench seats. Still, if they have the time, and someone else is driving, maybe like a mouse once said, the kids will be all right...
