Boy, I don't know about this thread. When my daughter finished grad school (at least for now), I think she wasn't looking past paying for her student loans.
That Acura NSX is a different story. About 25 years ago, when the first generation of NSX's came out, two of my law partners got them. One, who is quite tall, looked rather like an adult trying to fit into a pedal-powered toy car when he drove it. As a gag gift, I got him an "NSX Headroom Expansion Kit," consisting of tin snips and a pair of goggles.
I was tempted to get an NSX then, too, but my wife said no (in rather more emphatic terms) when she discovered my partners needed to put on a new set of tires every 5,000 miles. Shucks!
John
Edit: MikeMc, where do I get one of those? Now that I think of it, though, don't I need more than an ordinary driver's license, since it has more than two axles?

Only one was made so it has a name - the Xenia.
If it ever goes on the block again, and I doubt my friend is gonna sell it,
it would bring well north of $30 mil.

@JE. Yeah, I understand, but no student loans.... she did it with scholarships, including grad school - Smith College, University of Vermont. Proud Dad here ..... maybe I will get her the car.
And Happy New Year to everyone!!!! It's going to be a good year.

Although common in it's time, I thought this was a cool car. I owned it for about 5 years in the early 80's and tricked it out with suspension mods, headers and a ported and polished head/valves that took many hours of labor. Good times for sure.

The restoration was as close to original as possible, right down to the LeBaron Bonney upholstery.
I had planned to street rod it, but decided there were many rods available, but not that many originals.
I had fun with it, sold it to a collector.

Well I run up against that attitude (everything original stock) when it comes to my Z4 convertible which I believe to be an extremely cool car (even with the top up it has blown women's clothes off), but the problem is I am moving out to my ranch which is accessed by many miles of dirt road.
So many of my good friends who are no longer around rode in and enjoyed that car that it has sentimental value far above what I could sell it for. But with 4" clearance fuggetaboutit.
So I am looking into turning it into the world's only bavarian dune buggy, lifting it way up, adding big enough fenders, bull bar on the front and a high enough light rack to still op the top, maybe gerry can racks.
feedback anyone?

Probably not worth the hassle but I am sure you could find buyers fairly easily over here. I have had a few people offer me 3-4X what I paid for mine 15 years ago. If i were not so attached to it I might consider selling it. I also have a 2015 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited that is way more comfortable and has A/C that I drive daily now so i should consider selling the Rover but I just can't bring myself to part with it.

Cars have always held my attention and for my entire life I have been torn between racing cars or rock climbing.
If I won the lotto we would work on turning a big pile of cash into a little pile of cash via some sort of Race Car.
I have always loved Porsche, they are the last company that will sell you a real Race Car with plates.
And Cragman.... pretty nice ride, I had Alan Rudolph driving while I rode shotgun in one of those, we did 5 fast laps at the track... I was impressed! A Corvette that stays flat through the "S" turns... amazing - finally a USA car that can do that.

Here's the end of the Formula 1 V8 era. This thing idled at 6,000 rpm and was limited to 18,000 rpm by regulation. Some of the engines were running close to 22,000 rpm before the rules changes.

Edited again to add a nice engine test of the Honda V10. It's not worth watching the video past the engine test, about half way. The Cosworth V10 weighed in at 95 kg and put out something over 1000 hp from 3000 cc.

Augie and Frederic Duesenberg had been making race cars. Shortly after moving to Indianapolis, E.L. Cord, owner of Auburn, infused money and the brothers made 30 or so chasis with drive trains per year, and authorized 5 different coach builders to complete the projects. The Duesenbergs did have a stipulation, they test every car before delivery at the track, to make sure they achieved a minimum 110 miles per hour. That was quite something considering the last year of production, was 1937.
This is Sam Mann's one of a kind roadster, the most beautiful car, i have ever seen. Taken on the Duesenberg Club Tour September 2016, Upper Peninsula, Michigan.

not a car, but so cool..
When he started racing, Stirling could not afford to take a mechanic, and his wife to a race.
So she went to transmission school, so that she, could be his mechanic, and they did not need to be apart.
cool that she did that, cool that they have had a marriage where they always have wanted to be together, and cool for me to hear the story while hanging out on the patio, a year before this photo.
both are generous, happy, and kind people, and some might say Stirling, was the best driver.

Mouse, a Noel Coward play adapted for the big screen called "Easy Virtue".
It stars Jessica Biel as a race car driver who marries a rich toff whose
parents are Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth. Not a great film but
quite entertaining with some typically good Noel Coward lines and some
strong acting. A solid 4 stars. The opening scene shot at Monaco in the
1930's is worth the price of admission. Them fookers were going FAST back
then through the famed tunnel and they didn't even have seat belts IIRC!

Saw this Bimmer 2002 on the freeway yesterday and told The Wife to chase him down. No need as he got off at our exit. Sadly it wasn’t as cherry as it first looked - some crankloon had rear ended him, plus he had put some goofy looking seats in it. Not bad though.

LA has probably the highest number of super cars and just plain great cars than anywhere in the states. My son and I visit regularly to go to car shows. One trip we counted over 60 Teslas in 45 minutes. Not really a Tesla fan.....they don't make any noise! How come there are so many Mercedes AMG's in LA ?

Saw these driving home from a backpacking trip on Sat.
Pretty great cars, but why were they all staying at a Fairfield Inn? Cars got them broke? The Mclarens (sp?) were especially impressive. The dark one was all carbon fiber under the rear hatch, where I assume the motor is. That one and the blue Lambo were sitting at idle the whole time. Impressive sounds coming from the power plants, to say the least. That said, I had a far better time in the woods with my dog than I would’ve had driving those impressive machines around. Had to stop and rubberneck though. Cool cars for sure.

Hey mouse, thanks for those Lambo videos, they are great! So much throttle oversteer; sure proves there are a lot of people with more money than driving skills.
During the winter, back when I was racing, I would, on a slow Sunday when the crew was over, open up the garage, start the formula car and warm it up, then back up to the door frame, rev the engine and dump the clutch and light the tires, then it was a test to see if you could get on the binders and stop before hitting the front of the garage. I suspect the few beers we consumed made it see like a good idea. Never hit the wall though. Did leave a few black marks on the concrete.
Edited to add: The car in question. Also cool. Reynard Formula Ford 2000.

The above was Ferrari's 60th anniversary in the USA as celebrated by Ferrari closing down Rodeo Drive for a day. with 60 notable cars on display including the US debut of La Ferrari.
as for 2018 Pebble..were you there?? did Sam Mann buy it? not his usual style to buy at an auction, but if he wanted it...

Dood, I’m 1/4 English. I’d get an Aston if I could afford one. I gots history with Jags back when they truly were, uh, somewhat less than dependable. So I was out for a lovely cruise around the hills of Irvine and Newport Beach in the old XJS when I pulled onto an overlook of the Back Bay. I get out to better admire it and I catch this wiff of petrol. Now I might be a petrol head but I’m not into huffing it, if you catch my drift. I pop the hood and there’s bloody petrol oozing out around the injector seals straight onto the bloody hot head! Bloody hell!
Now the new ones, from all I’ve read, are pretty well put together and, most importantly, to channel Billy Crystal, they still look mahvelous. I know the Z06 would give me more bang for my buck but the F Type has a decent boot and a way nicer interior.

Here's an old tractor engine running at zero rpm.
A Lanz tractor displaying it`s unique ability to continue running despite not completing a full crankshaft rotation. The Lanz`s two stroke engine uses plunger actuated indirect injection into a hot bulb, crankcase pre compression and piston ported cross flow induction and exhaust allowing it to not only run backward, but also at zero RPM`s. This state is not able to maintain itself for long periods as the small amount of fuel used is insufficient to keep the hot bulb at the temperature required to continue igniting the fuel and it will eventually stop.

The little-known successor to the Ford GT 40 program, a group 6 endurance racing beauty (a category roughly analogous to the modern Le Mans Prototype), is the 1968 Ford P68.
Also known as the F3L, because it used the F1 Ford Cosworth DFV 3L V8 engine.
The original design did not rely on using the engine as a fully stressed member, but this surviving example was reworked, incorporating the power plant as a fully stressed member as originally intended, just as those power plants were implemented in the Formula One cars of the day.
This car received much less financial support from Ford than its predecessor, the GT 40. It also marks the high point of aesthetic aerodynamics when designers, largely unaided by wind tunnels and inscrutable calculations, came up with what they imagined to be the most slippery shapes. Wind tunnel testing did however, confirm that this car had a very low coefficient of drag. Just after this came a more functional understanding of downforce as an aid to traction in corners and superior high-speed stability overall, which produced less artistically inspired, sinuous, sexy, imaginative undulations and gave way to flat decking and the short-lived high wings attached to Formula One cars in 1968, which were quickly banned due to hazards, but soon mounted much lower to the chassis, and became ubiquitous in other iterations of open wheel and sports racing cars.
This more naïve approach, with its purely slippery aesthetic is especially obvious in the tail of the car, which is much closer in character to the original 25 Porsche 917s that were homologated for Group 4 in 1969, also presenting handling issues do to the contours of the rear half of the car. To my mind, this Ford is even prettier than the Lola T 70, the Ford appearing wider, with lower contours and more svelte overall. The Lola showed the flat rear decking of the more successful 917 short tails that followed up the original 917 design, which maintained the aerodynamic aesthetic of the 907.
Read more about the car, recently restored:
https://silodrome.com/1968-69-type-ford-p68-f3l-car/

That particular Ford P68 is a cool car, is race ready for the vintage circuit ... and it's for sale!
Well, was for sale, recently bringing US $679,849:
https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/24878/lot/229/
In his book Alan Mann quoted Richard Attwood as follows: "He maintains to this day that, although it lacked downforce, the (Ford P68's) basic handling was very good and he tells me that he really enjoyed driving it in 1968. He points out that it was astonishingly fast and he also reminded me recently that, in every race it did in 1968, the F3L was on pole, led the race or set the fastest race lap. Those facts speak for themselves in Richard's way of thinking, and he feels that the car has been criticized too harshly ever since..."
Only three P68/F3L cars were made.

Beautiful cars Tarbuster. I really don't know shite, but IMHO, they remind me of some of the stylized Art Deco shapes below.

Maybe more naturalized "speed" than the minimalist formula cars today. Fast is fast, but if you can add a bit of aesthetics getting there, why not.

More on the beautiful Lola T70.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_T70
......................................
It's well-known that George Lucas was always, and is, a car buff.
Here's a Lola T70 Mark III in his directorial debut, THX 1138, from 1971.
(The title, THX 1138, was also used for a license plate in American graffiti. John Milner's yellow deuce coupe – plate #THX 138)
The car here is dolled up with all kinds of frivolous externalia … to look like a jet car, and driven by Robert Duvall's character.
Earlier in the movie, a guy stuffs himself into a green Lola T70 Mark III (single instead of dual headlights could indicate a Mark II front end) ...
And then that character briskly stuffs the green Lola into this pillar:
The chase scene featured two Lola T70 Mk III race cars[12] being chased by Yamaha TA125/250cc two-stroke, race-replica motorcycles through two San Francisco Bay Area automotive tunnels: the Caldecott Tunnel between Oakland and Orinda and the underwater Posey Tube between Oakland and Alameda.[2][2] According to Caleb Deschanel, cars drove at speeds of 140 mph while filming the chase.[2] Other cars appearing in several scenes of the movie include the custom-built Ferrari Thomassima cars; one of them is on display in the Ferrari museum in Modena, Italy.[13]
Concerning the stunt at the end of the clip performed by the motorcycle rider:
The chase featured a motorcycle stunt: Stuntman Ronald "Duffy" Hambleton (credited as Duffy Hamilton) rode his police motorcycle full speed into a fallen paint stand, with a ramp built to Hambleton's specification, flew over the handlebars, was hit by the airborne motorcycle, landed in the street on his back, and slammed into the crashed car in which Duvall's character had escaped.[2] According to Lucas, it turned out Hambleton was perfectly fine, apart from being angry with the people who had run into the shot to check on him. He was worried that they might have ruined the amazing stunt he had just performed by walking into frame.
I'm not usually much for dystopian shock-jock types of films, but this one happens to be one of my favorite sci-fi treats.

Had no idea they made so many 917’s!
They had to build that many (25) by rule to be homologated for racing.

Page 2:
I noted seeing Roger Moore’s ‘68 P1800 at the Volvo Museum in June. Here’s a nice tribute (and video) to him, to mark the one year anniversary of his passing, and the P1800 by Pelle Petterson, who designed it when he was 25!
The takeaway:
“He refers to the 60´s television series “The Saint” in which Roger Moore played the lead character, the infamous Simon Templar, and drove a white P1800 in all the 118 episodes from 1962 until 1969. The show began as a mystery series but over the years integrated secret agent and fantasy-style plots. The show switched from black and white to color during the mid-60s. During the black and white episodes, Moore would start each episode talking to the audience. For the color episodes, Moore would begin each episode with a narration. After Jaguar rejected the request to use an E-type, Volvo was happy to provide their P1800.”

But Reilly … Does your grocery-getter have the handling and the brakes of a Ferrari? (Rhetorical).
And if you stuff it into a corner, is there any kind of cargo retention system to protect those tomatoes?
If I were given to your presumed shopping proclivities, I'd have perhaps considered plunking down for one of these instead, a Volvo 1800 ES:
That sleek, iconic Volvo P1800, designed by Pelle Petterson, was really quite something for a 25-year-old to pen, and to my mind, for 1957, way ahead of its time!
And it still looks entirely unique and very beautiful after all these years.
Thanks for the commemorative video, BTW.
The car looks great with minilite wheels!

A serious grocery-getter - Audi R8 LMS
Editorial aside:
A Brit up the street has a ‘normal’ R8. He drives it sanely and I can’t say I’ve seen him breaking the 30 mph limit on my street as compared to the myriad others who deem speed limits as beneath their contempt.

Reilly, your gentleman neighbor and his road manners get the tip of my hat.
Sounds like the kind of fellow with whom I'd enjoy sharing an adult beverage and a relaxed chat.
I suspect he comports himself that way because true enthusiasts don't flash their cars around neighborhoods like uncouth children armed with loaded weapons.
My old man used to drive his X1/9 through neighborhoods well below the speed limit. One of my buddies thought "your dad looks like he's hunting for a race". No, quite the contrary. He had a profound respect for machinery, speed, and public safety. Sure, he got it on under the right conditions, out in the sticks, or exhibited the occasional flash of spirited driving on roads designed for a modicum of speed.
The only place to really let it hang out is at a race track. We have them for a reason.
Then there is Ortega Highway ...

Fiat X1/9
The X1/9 succeeded the 1969 Autobianchi A112 Bertone Runabout (it) concept, with styling by Bertone under chief designer Marcello Gandini.
The engine was Designed by Aurelio Lampredi, famed Ferrari engine designer before he went to work for FIAT (the parent company, at that time). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_X1/9
Dallara Icsunonove
In 1975 the X1/9 was chosen by Dallara to enter the World Championship for Makes in the Group 5 Special Production class.[19] The Dallara Icsunonove (the Italian pronunciation of "X1/9") featured a modified X1/9 engine with a custom 16-valve cylinder-head and fundamental suspension and body/monocoque alterations, the most obvious of which are the massively flared wheel-arches and the oversized rear wing.[20]

because nostalgia... I remember seeing these from the back seat of my dad's CVCC
Never got to ride in my uncle's '65 El Camino. Nominally street legal. 1/4 mile in just under 10 sec. 350 chevy small block, bored, balanced, blueprinted by TRW racing (stroked?) I don't know enough, to know enough. 4 bolt transmission, clutch stall converter? Nitrous under the dashboard. A sleeper. He wanted to give it to me and my brother when I were 16. My mom said, "No.". I miss my uncle.
edit: was, but I'm going to leave it.

Something I didn't know about the Pantera:
... when reading up on the Volvo P 1800, which was designed by Pelle Petterson under the tutelage of Italian auto stylist Pietro Frua while Frua's studio was a subsidiary of the prestigious carrozzeria Ghia, is that:
Ghia had partial involvement in the De Tomaso Pantera, a high-performance, mid-engine car utilizing a Ford V8. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrozzeria_Ghia
While the very organic coachwork between the Volvo P 1800 and the iconic Volkswagen Karmann Ghia bear some resemblance ...
... I would've expected the Pantera to have been designed by the likes of Bertone or Pininfarina. Sure enough, if you look at the badging behind the front wheel arch of the Pantera, there it is:
And reading up on the Pantera, we get:
Coachwork by Ghia (a subsidiary of De Tomaso)
The Pantera, penned by Ghia's Tom Tjaarda, https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/hmn/2010/03/De-Tomaso-Pantera/2943411.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Tomaso_Pantera
Ghia also (by one who would become another esteemed coachbuilder) designed the Maserati Ghibli, which was quite wedge shaped.
Its steel body, characterized by a low, shark-shaped nose, was designed by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro, then working at Ghia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maserati_Ghibli
Then there is the Maserati Bora:
The Bora was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maserati_Bora
Ah, then, to fully appreciate the Pantera, one must look at/read up on the De Tomaso Mangusta:
The word "mangusta" is Italian for "mongoose", an animal that can kill cobras. It was rumored that the car was so named because De Tomaso had some talks with Carroll Shelby to replace the Shelby Cobra with a racing car to be built in Italy by the Argentine-born De Tomaso ("De Tomaso Sport 5000" a.k.a. "De Tomaso P70"),[3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Tomaso_Mangusta
... I'm getting winded here.
So there's lots of relationships and cross pollination between all of these Italian coachbuilders, or carrozzeria in Italian.
Here's an exhaustive list of Italian coachbuilders:
Allemano
Bertone
Bizzarrini
Boano
Boneschi
Castagna
Colli
Farina
Fissore
Frua
Ghia
Giugiaro
Italdesign

Damn, Reilly:
Just last week a club showed up here on the Peak to Peak Highway with a slew of Ferarri, Lamborghini, and something I'd never seen in the wild, A Pagani Huayra.
I didn't get any photographs. But there were also some of the more suave front-engined Ferarri of more modern vintage...
Photographs do not do this blue Pagani justice. Standing next to it's art-house curves and otherworldly multivalent paint treatment, not to mention the tall, svelte thirtysomething long-maned blonde woman who owned it ... was like experiencing high art.
I think she was waving me down as I drove around the car for a last look in my lowly alpine white 1988 BMW 325 IX, but I couldn't stop to say hello because I was sporting a full-fledged boner!
And one of these was a Ferarri Ferarri GTC4 Lusso.
The example I witnessed had a bizarre color scheme; metallic copper with yellow brake calipers and gold wheels. The couple who owned it were decidedly European: the guy was decked out in snakeskin Lycra, yellow running shoes and easily in his mid-50s, with gray hair and some kind of Gucci sunglasses. Them kids weren't no Americuns! I told his arm piece that I liked the more restrained Ferarri the best, of which theirs was one of two examples. Peacocks, all around, and not just the people!
The other was, I believe, a black Ferrari 550, something like this:
.......................................................
But, here is the cake-taker grocery-getter of all time, if not one of the ugliest Ferrari ever!

Okay, sorry. I understand that was uncalled for: unnecessary roughness if you will.
Here's a palate cleanser – one of the most beautiful Ferrari endurance racers ever produced, way more sleek and svelte than the subsequent, meaty 512 S.
Though perhaps, still not quite so gorgeous as that 3 liter Ford P68 from the previous page.
The Ferrari 312 P:
The Ferrari 312 P was a Group 6 Prototype-Sports Car used for racing in 1969 and 1970. The new 1971 version of the sports prototype came with a flat-12 engine, often referred to as a boxer engine. Many publications added the letter B after the P of its name to indicate its engine type, but this variation was never officially sanctioned by Ferrari which simply called it the 1971 312P.

Looks more like a Citroën than a Volvo.
That marque, Citroën, would for sure produce such a thing.
I like the mil-spec grocery getter at the top of your post, Reilly!
Though, given that it probably didn't originate in the USA, mil-spec might not be the correct appellation.
And, noting what urban dictionary classifies as a grocery getter, probably not really one of those either.
But I am so enamored of that distinction, I vote we use it wherever and whenever we please!
(w/o the hyphen, apparently)
TOP DEFINITION
Grocery Getter
A compact, sub-compact or mid-sized coupe, sedan, hatchback or station wagon with a generous amount of trunk/hatch space and a back seat that usually folds down, powered by an unimpressive yet reliable and reasonably economical 4 cylinder engine. The idea is that such a vehicle is uninspiring to drive, but the trunk space at least makes it good for getting groceries.
Generally speaking, a bigger (ie; V6) engine or an engine that is turbo- or supercharged, along with bigger sway bars and stiffer suspension, are necessary turn a grocery getter into either a sports sedan or a sports coupe. Without these upgrades, a sporty-looking compact or sub-compact coupe is considered just a grocery getter.
"Dude, I know you like your car, but why are you talkin' up a grocery getter?"
I've read about the Nissan Figaro and applaud such an effort.
Per the 7 million quid for the Jag: many of those 60s and 70s sports racers can only be accessed by the 1% ers. (The Lola T 70 would be an example of the exception.) But, owing to their interest, there's never been a better time to enjoy the curation of these vehicles. There is a martini liveried 917 valued at $22 million. And it gets raced! (Or at least tracked.)

Long story, so brief condensation: Claudio Roddaro of Monaco (and lots of money) owned Porsche 917-37 that was never completed by Porsche. He bought Porsche 917-30, owned by Count Rossi of Rossi & Martini which had a legal license for street driving in Alabama, of all places, because of some arcane state law that allowed registration of a vehicle if certain conditions were met; this was one of two street legal 917s; this was a while ago.
So Claudio had a 917 that could be legally driven in Alabama. He used parts from the Rossi 917-30 to finish the 917-37 he also owned, at an estimated cost of $28 million. Monaco’s road laws states a car which has been registered overseas can also be driven on the road in the principality. With lots of paperwork he showed the cars were identical and was issued a license plate for Monaco. Why he didn't use the Rossi 917 I have no clue, but there we are! A street legal 917 that can be driven in Monaco. I guess you could just drive under the toll gates........
Here's a link to an article and more pictures.

Yeah, Winemaker:
I read about the silver progenitor to the Roddaro Martini liveried 917.037 car some time ago. It's been around, in street trim, since the 70s.
Yet: there was a third according to Jalopnik/Porsche.
There were actually two street legal 917s before Roddaro’s, according to Porsche, with one of those providing a pathway for Roddaro to make his street legal. https://jalopnik.com/how-to-make-a-porsche-917-street-legal-1825399266
So this does describe Count Rossi's silver 917 .030 as the "pathway" car. Same as in your link.
That's the one I read about, BITD.
But none of the articles talk much about the third car.
Same story, more detail:

One of the most innovative things Porsche did was incorporate mechanical fuel injection. Beginning with the 911R in '67 for the '68 model year, Porsche used MFI for fuel delivery on its factory race cars. Mostly for the throttle response and reliability. 907, 908, 910 through to the 917 used MFI. A Bosch effort, it first appeared on a road car with the MBZ 300SL in the '50s. Porsche had long collaborated with Daimler Benz and adopted the technology. Porsche first used it on a road car for the '69 911S. The '73 model year was the last for MFI. All 911S cars used it as well as the 73RS.
It is a jewell of fascinating technology from the day and still serviceable as ever. It is not an ancillary part to the engine like carburetors. Once you think of it as an integral to the engine they are easier to understand. It is driven by a toothed belt timed to one of the camshafts. As much as any sub assembly on the 917, the MFI was responsible for its grotesque acceleration. And as you know the success of the 917 killed CAN AM.
For full disclosure I have a '73 911S with MFI; its awesome. Tuning it is different but it is truly a set it and forget it piece. Carbs are way more fiddly. It was most often found on long haul semis. Also the Mooney Porsche with the 911 engine used MFI.

There might be some clambers that are

So then tonight running the pre-trip gas up,

I hope it haunts some one it looks cherry.
The color is perfect, if you know the classic green.
I pushed to get the hood up, for a shot,

*Out in the boonies, if you pay attention, about a kilometer outside many small towns there is

Fun fact about Volvo P1800 vs. Saab Sonett: Per ”Turbo-Per” Gillbrand started as an engine test engineer at Volvo in 1956. He subsequently becomes an engine development engineer, and helped develop the 4-cyl inline B18 engine for the P1800 in the early 1960’s.
In 1964 he was recruited by The Saab factory, located in Trollhättan only 80 km north of Volvo HQ in Gothenburg, and his first assignment was the development of the 4-stroke V4 engine for the Sonett, among others.
The B18 engine, followed by the B20, B21 and B23 with similar layout, became the backbone for Volvo Car’s engines for 30 years to come.
As his nickname suggests, Per has gone down in motor history not only for the B18 and the V4, but mostly for the adaption of the exhaust-driven turbo-compressor for practical use in everyday street cars.

I'm sorry for the reply to post #85 in this thread coming 15 months late, but this is not an Austrian "Geländewagen".
This is a Volvo "Personlastterrängbil" (Light Utility Terrain Vehicle) 903, civilian designation C202.
Nicknamed Volvo "Valp" (dog puppy) by the public.
About 10000 were produced for the Swedish armed forces, and also Norwegian army during the 60's and early 70's.
A couple of 1000 were also produced for fire and rescue brigades, and the national telephone and power companies.
This specific example belonged to the fire department in the county of Åtvidaberg in south-east Sweden. Obviously :)
Bonus info; Volvo used the 64-hp B18A engine för the Valp as well.

I'd like to know more about it, and maybe see it run on the track and have it critiqued in that environment.
The embellishments to the bodywork are pretty restrained in terms of tack-on aerodynamics, which is a nice approach.
It's refreshing that it's not all boy-racered out with ground effects and wings and stuff. Though I'm sure those things would help at speed.
I get what you mean about backsliding the design some, but that stretched look is all about getting it set up for the mid-engine treatment and probably largely unavoidable, given that goal.
If you have time, watch the time lapse build out on the YouTube link.
What this guy said about it is quite laudatory:
About 16 minutes into this video, I've come to the conclusion, this man is a Master- Artist. This coming from a 69-year-old lifetime mechanic/technician. Excellent work, so much planning went into this. I don't know who the owner is but whoever commisioned this had "Deep Pockets". What a work of art. Thank you for sharing.

Kind of sad to think there may be a generation of kids that learn to ride self driving cars. Let alone, they may never know the importance of bench seats. Still, if they have the time, and someone else is driving, maybe like a mouse once said, the kids will be all right...

Are those real carbon fiber or this?
Edited to add: Fiber orientation on that wheel does look like the real thing; if so pretty pricey. I'm not convinced carbon fiber is the ideal material for a street car wheel though; a couple of whangs against the curb and it's re-lam the de-lam as we used to say in the business... Not sure how a wheel is made though and guess it is some sort of dry layup with a resin injection and cooking in a mold.

Jack and I designed and built Nebulous Theorem III in 92-93. Last August at the beginning of Speed Week he called me all excited to tell me on the down run his partner was running a 4 liter turbo engine and ran over 380 mph. On the return run they upped the boost and ran high 380’s through the timing trap and was clocked at 398 through the final 1/4 mike. The two way average was 384.7 mph shattering the existing record by 50 mph and making it the worlds fastest gasoline powered car.
Not bad for a 25 year old low budget build

I think Jack is the most natural engineer I've had the fortune to know, and his formal education stopped at 8th grade. He's 83 and still building cars and motorcycles.
As he explains it, "Nebulous Theorem means theories made valid by results." Given the number of records he's set, as I recall Nebulous II has somewhere around 20+ or perhaps 30 records at Bonneville and El Mirage, and it's one of ~10 land speed vehicles he's built in the past 30 years his Nebulous Theorems have been made valid by results. A long way of saying, no wind tunnel testing. The design criteria was to make the car as narrow and low as possible. I forget the exact dimensions but somewhere between 24 and 28" wide and the same on height. I think the length is 28'. I came up the idea of the staggered front wheels as a means of making the front as narrow as possible.

That's an old picture, Neb III has run many different engine classes and many different displacements. It was the only photo I had handy to gives a view of what is under the bodywork.
If you're interested in the records Jack has set with his vehicles, he has a list on his website: http://www.jackcostella.com/ scroll to the bottom of the page.
The letters refer to engine displacement and vehicle class. In the case of the latest record E/BGS the E denotes engine displacement 184-260.99 (see table below) the BG is supercharged/turbocharged on gasoline (Blown Gas) and S is streamliner. If it was a naturally aspirated engine running on gas in the case of Jack getting into the 300 mph club it was D/GS in that case 300 cu in naturally aspirated running on gas. The XF prefix is a vintage engine class using a Ford flathead.
For cars the engine displacement breaks in cubic inches is:
Class Displacement
AA 501.00 and over
A 440.00–500.99
B 373.00–439.99
C 306.00–372.99
D 261.00–305.99
E 184.00–260.99
F 123.00–183.99
G 93.00–122.99
H 62.00–92.99
I 46.00–61.99
J 31.00–45.99
K 30.99 and under
Motorcycles have different displacement breaks and go all the way down to 50cc as I recall
El Mirage is a shorter course with no return runs so slower for a given engine displacement.

I really enjoyed being let in on the thought process and the execution of the build.
What's also quite interesting is how in automotive design, as in climbing, power to weight ratio is key. For pure enjoyment, and also racing efficacy, light is quite often right!
The guy definitely underscored how the minimalism of the design and execution amounts to quite a lot of the zest of the whole experience.

All of the Zagato/Storz redos were supposed to have pushrod engines. I think Storz had a 4Cam in the original and the one in this video sounded more like a 4Cam than a pushrod. Either way I'd happily take one. I also like this one without the fins; beautiful.

Well, I did as requested by Chris. What a joke. I won't argue the legality side of this, but this is the only place I've seen such draconian culling of content. There seem to be no issues on other sites I post on; certainly we're not posting pictures here for commercial use.
I think this place is dead. I thought about deleting any threads I started, but that would be as draconian as what I'm complaining about. There seems to be no way to post a picture of a car or whatever that existed in 1913, as I certainly did not take the photo; it seems to me a good argument could be made for fair use for education, but what do I know. This really sucks.
Thanks to all of you who posted to this thread; there were some really cool cars...

One of the few reasons remaining to post on this site is to chew the fat with people we've come to know through interaction here over the years.
Going forward, I'm definitely not generating any new content whatsoever. As I can no longer climb, I'm not taking any new photographs. I've been primarily hanging around to talk about cars, Formula 1, and jazz. To the degree that involves generating or sharing content on those three topics, most of that will violate their policy.
If you can't post a visible YouTube video about cars or music or historical media of any kind related to climbing and talk about it, then it's pretty darn neutered for those of us who no longer climb.
It's so inflexible as to be laughable. I suppose the trip report function will persist, because at least then you know for sure you are not infringing on any copyrights by posting your own pictures.
Maybe it will eventuate in CMAC getting more or less what he's been asking for: pretty much climbing content only. A younger crowd might start infiltrating and do just that, but I'm left with little to do here at this point.
Someone mentioned it's like a remodel: tear it down and rebuild it the way you want it. I don't think this is really what they want, but they've been intimidated into stripping it down to this level, that's clear.
It's pretty lean, and it might persist in this condition, who knows. Time will tell. It's pretty much a dumpster fire or a corpse. ... Or a corpse IN a dumpster fire!
Ha ha: at least I can still make myself laugh. So I/we still got that going on!!!
