Hello -

This post is intended to make you aware of a dog that went missing after an automobile accident along SR120. The thinking that perhaps someone here may be hiking or climbing in the area over the winter and see the dog. Clearly the odds are long, but that's what most people thought until the dog was seen earlier this month after more than a month and a half being out in the cold.

So it occurred to me that raising awareness of the dogs' plight couldn't hurt by posting the information here, among like minded souls that enjoy the outdoors.

Please have a look at the details below

Thanks very kindly,

Shawn
----------

On 10/14/15 Achilles owners were in a car accident on SR120 one-half mile west of road In2, between Tioga Pass and Highway 395. Achilles remains missing and needs your help to be found. He was last seen on December 4, 2015 at about 4PM, when he crossed SR120 near Warren Fork Creek and ascended the slope north of the road.
He has not been seen since.

Achilles is a neutered male blonde Lab mix with a white belly and white feet. His nose is usually pink, but it sometimes changes to black. He normally weighs about 60 lbs. He was not wearing a collar when the accident occurred. Achilles is micro-chipped.

WTF, very good idea. If the owners are dedicated to finding this beautiful dog, they should try this.

Maybe even leave a trail of clothing items along the dogs known trail. Camp around the area for a week or so. Walk the trail of clothes daily, call out the dogs name from the owners' voices.

Posting flyers in the area could help too. Good luck, Achilles!

Be sure to remove the scent clothing when all is said and done, no need to add trash up there.

Wtf that is an excellent idea.
I was a second pack member to my sister's dog Nayla. Whenever I would visit my sister and stay in her house in CT Nayla would stick to me like glue. When it was time to leave I always left out a pair of slippers and a used gym T shirt that I kept there, and Nayla would sleep with those items for a couple of weeks before my sister would stow them away for my next visit.

Thanks for the comments, ideas and good wishes. The owners of Achilles (aka "Mr. Chili") have gone through heroic efforts to find their dog.

After getting out of the hospital, they stayed to search for weeks. Eventually they had to return home after not seeing Mr. Chili, so they flew back home. Then, a verified sighting of Mr. Chili occurred, so they returned, staying on Tioga Road nights for most of December. With ongoing home and job obligations, they just went back home yesterday.

There are some people that continue to look for Mr. Chili, seems he is hunkered down in the survival mode. Hopefully he'll find his way down to the power plant or some other place warmed up up during the winter.

Here is an early news article:

The last sighting was on 12/4/15 - "at the last paved turnout before you get to the horseshoe turn". The dog was observed coming up the south embankment proceeding across the highway and heading north up the hill.

Has anyone here has been down to the power station just off 120? I'm wondering if SCE locks a gate across the road or not?

Cheers -

SCE does close the Powerhouse Road if there is too much snow.

Dogs also have very remarkable hearing. My neighbor's little Yorkie was attacked by a German Shepard (severely injured) but she was able to get him to return to the sound of his favorite "squeaky toy".

Dogs can hear five times more acutely than humans, and cats about twice as acutely as dogs. Like Hz, dB also increase exponentially,
so 30dB is ten times as loud as 20dB, and 40dB is 100 times as loud. A practical example is that a whisper weighs in at about 30dB, and a dog can hear that from almost three times as
far away as a human

Here are my $0.02 for something that worked locally when a couple and their dog were scud running thru a pass going into Idaho & crashed their aircraft on the south side of Lost Trail pass.

They were in a group including two other aircraft. The couple w/ dog crashed. The others lucked out making a 180, & flying back north landing in Hamilton MT to report the crash

All 3 survived the crash which happened near Hwy 93. When the rescuers arrived the dog spooked, and disappeared.

I visited the couple, who were both in various states of disrepair in one of our local hospitals in Missoula MT, ~100 north of the crash site.

I had a cassette tape recorder that the couple used to record their call to their dog.

Volunteers used the tape during their search. The dog responded to the voices of his people, popped out of the woods, & all was good.

So, a voice recording could be used during the day. Or, without me knowing what could be used to play the recording overnight, leave a player on overnight in view of the game camera, along with food and the owners clothing.

Always hoping for a good outcome......

PS: Maybe Cragman (Dean Rosnau),who is probably aware of all this would know how to set this up??..

I've been following this case with interest. As far as I can tell, they have tried EVERYTHING, what WTF recommended, to a T, early on, to tracking dogs, hanging out and calling for him, etc. etc. etc. It is super puzzling why he won't come in.
I've wanted to go and search myself, but they were recommending folks NOT do this for fear of spooking him more.
Something is keeping him from going downhill into Lee Vining. It seems to me that is what most lost, hungry dogs would do.

The only thing I can come up with is he has been adopted by the local coyotes and is hanging with them, turning feral. Reaching, yes.

Heartbreaking situation for sure.

Might be worth a call to the Marines near Bridgeport, see if he turned up at the MWTC. Big stretch, but it's not that far away considering the time frame, probably less than 20 miles as the crow flies. I dont know how plausible crossing that terrain would be, just thinking of possible population centers that would attract a hungry pup.

That's just it, Lee Vining is an easy jaunt down 120 and he hasn't done that.

WHY? What's keeping him out in the cold?

GLee - Got your message; thanks very much.

Thanks too for the other ideas.

I had wondered if the dog is staying at, or near, the power station on the south side of 120. The accident occurred down 120 right next to the entry road to the station. Recent sightings of the dog are just above (north) of the station crossing 120. In other words, after the accident he may have traveled down the power station road to its dead end and set up camp there.

Most on the FB pages believe he is staying above and north of 120 and apparently has shown himself a few times mid to late afternoon.

It would seem to me that if the power station is lit up at night (?), the dog would associate the lights with humans and warmth?

Bump for this still missing dog

https://www.facebook.com/people/Achilles-Barraco/100010513300338

From the above:

The last sighting of Chili was December 4, on Highway 120. The most recent sighting of a dog that looked like Chili was yesterday, May 19, on or near Highway 88 near Markleeville. This would be the third sighting of a Chili look-a-like in the same area.
There was also another sighting in April, near Mammoth Lakes, of a dog that looked like Chili. No other sightings in this area since.
