JIM:

You underestimate the Mormon promises for the hereafter.

Each Mormon -after first ascending to heaven and spending some indeterminate time ripening in wisdom while sitting beside Jesus and God himself - doesn't just get to be the God of their own planet.

No, that's chicken feed.

They get to be God of their own UNIVERSE.

Which brings to mind this question as a logical sequela: How many Gods exist in the Mormon mega-universe? Talk about polytheism! But real Mormons don't ask such questions; they just believe.

So Jesus would climb the north chimney ( mostly ) with a cute blonde, rather than scramble around on the approach to one of the tombstones, solo.
Got it!

That was a fairly decent description of climbing for a non-climber.

I never felt the exaltation of God when soloing, though, and man did I love to solo.

1:24-1:25 in the video, you can see artifacts of the rope that were edited out when he falls.

"His laws are absolutely secure anchors of protection that dispel fear, and assure success, in an otherwise dangerous world. True and enduring happiness, with the accompanying strength, courage, and capacity to overcome the greatest difficulties, will come as you center your life in Jesus Christ. Obedience to His teaching provides a secure ascent in the charity of life. The secure anchors of his laws will assure safety and success as you scale the challenges you will face. Yours will be a life of peace and happiness...."

These are all great goals, and I can't fault the church for promoting these values. Every person who I have personally known to be a Mormon has been a fine example of humanity.

What I don't understand is why any religion needs to create a set of other practices and beliefs bundled along with these things, to create an exclusive community and foster a sense of belonging to that community at the expense of their sense of belonging to the broader set of humanity who do not follow the same doctrine. Those things seem to be the artifacts of human vices bound up in the structure of organized religion, at conflict with the central tenets and social purpose of the religion.

I would like to hear from folks who are close followers of specific religions to comment on this. Why mix noble goals with exclusionary practices that will obviously lead to conflict with non-believers? Why must we be uniform to share a sense of humanity and community?

Religion is a feel good cop out, face it.....
your prayers don't effect outcomes,
you're going to die and you won't see St. Peter, so don't worry about making a good impression,
you don't need to have faith in a personal god to behave in a morally acceptable way.....tons of evidence to the contrary,
But, then again, evidence means little to people with faith.

I probably don't quite fit your description, but do believe in God and follow a practice. So I believe that I could answer your question. I would answer it by asking you a question. Is there an action that would cause you to not accept another person into your community? I'm sure that you can see where this is going. If you would exclude someone, then why do you believe that religious people, people who believe in God, should automatically accept all people, and thus all behavior?

One of the worst teachings to come out in modern times is the concept of unconditional love, as though God should love/accept everything. This is a patently false teaching. God does not accept evil. Evil is a creation of humans. God does love everyone, but his/her love includes discipline/consequences.

But people don't want discipline. They want to be able to do whatever they want to with no consequences, hence the creation of unconditional love, which is a human consciousness creation, and not a God consciousness creation.

The main problem with religion is that it is made up of people. People with all of their faults. What people ignore is that religion is not God.
