These ratings always amuse me because of the arbitrary nature of their criteria, their measurements, and their weighting. I remember when the first city rankings came out, with the Big Raisin dead last. I was living in the Big Orange (i.e. Los Angeles) at the time, but dug into the components of the ratings and was surprised to find Fresno ranked near the bottom in recreation.
I discovered the reason: the sole measurement for recreation in that study was bowling alleys per capita. The survey designers - residents of the snowy northeast, figured that everyone went bowling. It never occurred to them that lots of people can play on grass year round, and prefer that to bowling. Fresno doesn't have many bowling alleys, but we have lots of softball diamonds, soccer fields and golf courses - not to mention an amazing number of fun runs, excellent cycling and, of course, easy access to great climbing.
I wonder how many people actually take the results of these studies at face value.

Best quality of life in New Hamshire??? Kinda pretty, especially in the Fall and some good climbing but humidity and bugs in the Summer, and grey skys and damp cold in the Winter do not make for paradise in my book....C minus. Okay, we'll make that a straight C.
There is no best or worst place to live in America, but there is a best place for YOU. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, most people don't live where their heart desires.
