It's the American Way.
Read Cadillac Desert by Marc Reisner, 2nd Edition.
Most water suppliers bill by the CCF unit of measure (100 cubic feet), which is equivalent to 784 gallons.
I somehow manage to use 3-5 CCF per month which averages around 100 gallons a day for 4 CCF/month.

CA is in a wet period. And dams dont just trap water but they regulate the flow so as to prevent flooding. Before the Shasta lake dam was installed the Sac used to have devastating floods. There is a train trestle about a mile long in Redding that was built to go over the flood plane. Now it has housing complex's under it, thanks to the water saving Shasta dam

Now that the pesky Sac is dammed-its not a flood plane anymore....
They are thinking of raising the Shasta lake dam to its originally designed height (it was stopped short of its full size)

A few years before the painted crack someone dropped a banner down the front of the dam which appeared as a top to bottom crack. I don't recall who did it, Earth First or Greenpeace, but the news report said it scared the crap out of a worker driving up the road that morning.

If they tear it down SF will have to drink the polluted Sacramento river water presently being piped to the east bay
If they tear it down SF will have to keep drinking bottled water just like they currently do.

It was Glen Canyon Dam in northern AZ that members of Earthfirst! dropped the banner down to make it look as if the damn had cracked.
This link has as short video showing the unfurling of the banner and a delightful speech by the late Edward Abbey:

It's the American Way..
Build a dam in Yosemite and flood the Forum Bully's underground bunker on Earth...then he'd agree that Hetch Hetchy needs to come down.
