Hey there,

As someone who grew up in Kernville, I've long looked at Split Mountain and wondered if/when the obvious Southeast face had been climbed. I was recently browsing through the old Needles guidebook, and noticed a small section in the back that refers to an established route called "Half-Wit":

Does anyone have additional info for this obscure climb? Any info would be much appreciated. If I can't find any additional info, I'll likely head up later this Fall season or next Spring to have a look around anyway.

Thanks!

How big is the thing? The guide description makes it sound like it could be several pitches, or just a rope length. EC Joe still posts here periodically. He might know.

I'm not 100% sure, but it looks to be 300-400 feet tall, depending on where the route starts. Here's a map of the peak: http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=35.751580,-118.482270&z=16&t=t2

Oh yeah, there are definitely more appealing options. This is just one of those "why in the world would I ever want to do that?" kind of things that sounds like a fun/miserable use of a day.

Will do! I'll hopefully get up there before the snow. Otherwise, maybe this Spring.

John Newman may still live in Kernville. Track him down for the beta.

It could/should be hella brushy up there. I remember working the southern edge of the StormyComplex in 89 or 90 running through tanks of gas cutting line in ceanothus, manzanita and the occasional p-pine whilst connecting outcrops as fuel breaks. I believe the mature veg return interval for that zone has probably been reached by now. Watch out for rattlers. I remember being around large rocks and we approached it from our namesake peak(BlackMountain) zone. I'd guess it is more than a pitch. My shot crew was quite active around Lake I and I'd recommend to anyone to go looking around and in any of the tribs(some are deep and narrow and are granitic for the most part with an occasional bit of limestone) to the I, there is a lot of rock, Hell, for PT, some days I'd ride my bike to Keyesville and boulder till noon! Loved that gig.

Good luck and post some pics!!

Don't know anything about the climb, but the views from the summit are great!

Actually that's a pretty serious concern up there. I walked into one way up Salmon Creek. First I saw the downstream end of the irrigation setup, then I saw a guy in camo with a rifle. Luckily he didn't see me, I move pretty quietly in the woods. I backed away slowly, and notified the rangers asap.
