Even I've been to the top of Texas Tower. I'm betting that hardest summit to attain in Utah is something only Crusher knows!

Middle Kichatna Spire......hardest summit in Alaska and, likely, North America. At 8800 and change it's less than half as high as the Pig (Denali). Just shows the best things often come in small packages.

Lizard Head is generally considered the most difficult in CO . . . the definition of summit is the variable.

"Obtainable summits/purely hiking-scrambling" N and S Thunder Peaks are pretty elusive for being accessible to 1.5 million local residents on the Wasatch front.

Hardest "really good" summit to reach.

Based on answers so far, looks from this chair to be:

Alaska - Middle Kitchatna Spire

Wyoming - Lost Temple Spire

Arizona - Spider Rock

Utah - Texas Tower

California - Castle Rock Spire

And as for New Mexico, I propose Shiprock.

Anyone done all those? Bet even Donini can't make the claim. But if he can, I am sure we will hear from him!

Utah - Texas Tower looks fairly tough, but Zeus with mandatory 5.11R could be a contender.

Arizona - both Spider Rock and Totem Pole are similarly hard and illegal.
Todd Gordon's likely unrepeated Tse-n-tytl mesa next to Spider Rock is also hard and illegal.

Hardest named peak to summit in Idaho is probably North Raker A2. Beckey told me the hardest summit in the North Cascades was Burgundy Spire 5.8-9. In Oregon, it's probably Mt. Washington, Three Fingered Jack or Mt Jefferson, all easy 5th class - and not including rock spires like Monkey Face, Turkey Monster, or Stein's Pillar.

Granite Creek Spire aka the Darth Vader Tower is harder than Castle Rock Spire. Easiest route is runout on 5.9ish terrain. Approach is much harder than one to CRS.

Lost Arrow, Higher Cathedral Spire all come to mind for California

Hahahhahahahaha. Those are like quarter of a day supertopo adventures.

Hardest must have a very complicated long approach, very difficult climbing on the easiest route and maybe objective danger that would make it not accessible for general public. CRS is likely the hardest very desired CA summit.

I surrender, Vitaliy. You're right, given your criteria. My list was thinking in historical terms, although I probably should have started with Half Dome, i.e. Half Dome, Higher Cathedral Spire, Lost Arrow, Castle Rock Spire.
