The current conventional wisdom is that as you age training should be INTENSE in nature with periods of COMPLETE rest (Don)

As mentioned earlier, this is valid for those who have an ongoing history of strenuous exercise, but questionable for older people who haven't kept up the pace.

Going on 79 I exercise strenuously several times a week for 30-50 minutes at a time. Legs and balance (aerobic) alternate with upper body stuff (strength).

I too am a big fan of KB and rowing. I don't live near any mountains at all.

Not to be overlooked is the humble farmer's walk. Optimize the weight so that you're sweating profusely 5 minutes it but can sustain the walk with occasional weight drops (for rest/recovery) for 20-30 min. It's no joke.

As for rowing, 5,000 meters in 20 minutes is a good benchmark for general fitness. It's a nice mix of cardio, core, and pull muscles, but not so intense that I can't have a casual session of gym climbing the next day.
