I hope you are not referring to me and my post on your toe thread. I was just kidding, but I don't use smiley faces. I also don't drink.

No not talking just about forums, and not referring to you, but out climbing. Seems you get more of that attitude out at the more crowded boulders, at least thats what i've noticed..

maybe think of yourself as a martial artist walking placidly amongst street fighters,
you're wearing a a nice smile ... for homework, watch and learn from a movie called the stepford wives.

a long tug on a (nalgene) bottle of jack wouldn't hurt either though. pass it around

Hear, hear. I only like friendly competition at most, and usually that even gets old fast. I climb for myself, and I don't want to be distracted by that bullsh#t.

Good one , Hooblie, I resemble that remark except for the Jack that I had to give up. I like the stuff you write by the way

Nawuchumean, i don't mind if they want to do it to prove something to themselves, but when they think i'm trying to be better than them is what bugs the hell out of me, i like climbing with people who are in it for the adventure and fun, making youself feel small in massive landscapes. Not getting to the top with "everyone is going to think im so great" in the back of their mind the whole time.

I know what you mean about surfers, if i see another 9ft board in the middle of the street with some dudes ass hanging out of his towel i'm running the board over and nocking off thier fully open driver side door. Not directed at all surfers just the goobers.

Not sure where you're climbing....I don't experience what you're talking about where I climb.
All of the people I meet in my two favorite areas (the Black Canyon, Indian Creek) are out having fun and making sure they don't rain on anyone else's parade.

Come to think of it....I do a lot of road tripping and I rarely experience the behavior you're talking about.

Great rant. I've not seen it where I climb. I've heard of it.

Every climbing circle I've been party to was encouraging, and up lifting.

Some climbs went down withe each member of the team pushing the attempt a little farther.

Strong drink and drug use gives extraordinary clarity and enlightenment that....sadly.....is only apparent to the user.

eKat is a wise lady. I should sojourn up there to the edge of it all to visit with her.
Poor Donini et al have selective vision....
Many folk do. You & I have it too. You can select to see what you seek.
The clue is alter what you seek. Perspective is everything.

I think you'll find both sorts of people (positive & encouraging or ego-fueled competitive) wherever you go, but you can choose which set of people you want to hear.

EDIT
Oh simulpost! Same idea as Skully's.

Yes I've read both of them and especially like the clipped, poetic sentences of Hemingway and took note when he ended his life with his favorite shotgun at the tender age of 61.

Another writer and noted alcoholic who died, prematurely, of a self inflicted gunshot wound was Hunter Thompson.

You suggest that their deaths are tragic. They were not. Each guy checked out on his own terms. Not yours, not mine. His.
