Bison
AVALON, Calif. —The head of a conservation group was gored by a bison on Santa Catalina Island, off the Southern California coast.

Forty-three-year-old Chris Baker was airlifted to a hospital Wednesday after the attack near the Two Harbors area.

Baker is president and CEO of the American Conservation Experience.

The Flagstaff, Arizona-based group says Baker was doing field work for a new trail system when he turned a corner and found the bison in front of him.

The group says the animal charged Baker. He then walked a quarter-mile on a hiking path until he saw three off-duty firefighters, who called 911.

The group says Baker is recovering from moderate injuries.

About 300 bison live on Catalina. The animals are descendants of 14 animals that were shipped over in 1924 for a Western film.

Actually growing smaller for bison on an island is an adaption:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foster%27s_rule

Might be a slight problem getting enough water there for them ,especially in summer and during this drought. Feed as well, there can't be much natural grazing after a couple years drought.

The herd on Catalina Island are about 150 individuals. They use birth control to limit their numbers. Sometimes they ship some off to Native American tribes.
Apparently the bison there have 45% cow ancestry and are therefore not pure Bison.

Everybody who has ever owned or rented* an airplane has flown to the Airport In The Sky for
bison burgers so, ironically, the bison cull the poor pilots of SoCal as there is a crash there
about every two or three years.

*a lot of FBO's specifically state in their rental agreements "Thou shall not fly to Catalina or Big Bear."
