Thanks for starting a thread on this topic; as it brings back some wonderful memories.
My father took us each summer to different National Parks to hike and learn about nature. A family of 9, packed in a Pontiac Safari station wagon for 3-4 weeks. Everyday was pre-planned, from point of departure to the hour of arrival at home in GA. He even had all hikes decided upon before we ever left home.
How my dad organized those trips, between 1964 - 1973, I will never know. It must have taken him a whole year to do it, considering he made most arrangements by mail correspondence; as he was not fond of the telephone. The telephone was a major compmonent of his trade, a small town cardiologist. As much as he loved his patients, he hated to hear that telephone ring.
We visited every state except Alaska, spent the majority of the time in the major National Parks, except Yosemite. (He most have had a premonition of my exodus to the valley.) I never asked why.
He studied the plant taxonomy and nomenclature for months so that he could identify them on our hikes. He had a fantastic memory, I dare say photographic. He could rattle off the common and scientific name of the flora as we found it and it was rare for his identification not to be confirmed when checked.
I didn't inherit the memory gene; but Indian Paintbrush is for a fixture in my mind.
And I can't make a decision on what to eat for lunch...

You're up early Hooblie. I'm cooling my heels in Tbilisi waiting to fly to Istanbul. The Caucasus Mountains of Georgia are beautiful but too late for many wildflowers.
