...I was out climbing with my great partner and good friend Gary Carpenter today.
We did our usual "first day" in Tuolumne routine... had a blast, remembered great times and generally enjoyed the time on the rock.

To most of you the significance will be lost, but to some you'll understand.

Old age forces us to sift between dreams and reality. For me, I realize that leading 5.11 now is a dream, but my reality is that I still enjoy the wind in the pines, the air and scenery, the excitement of going on the first morning pitch and the camaraderie of climbers and friends. In a way, it is a blessing that some climbs faded in my memory; I can feel the same butterflies in my guts as the first time I went up. I still enjoy South crack like as much as I did thirty years ago. ...and I still dream of Oz!
Ed, I totally understand your feelings, and wish many of the young punks will be able to feel the way we do in thirty of forty years.

Looks like it was a beautiful day Ed. That, a great partner and impeccable granite are a combo hard to match. You certainly don't let the grass grow under your feet.

I'm surprised the weather was good in the Meadows today, Ed. Glad to hear it. There was a huge hail storm there yesterday and very cold temps. Lots of rain. (but only after we finished a great day of climbing). The skies looked ominous this AM and we were headed back to the southland anyway so we climbed further south.

"it doesn't really matter what the route was" - perfect. I've felt that way since I started climbing, 40+ years ago.

Good to see you that you're out there! I drove by last month on the way back from a big trip with the kids, had a quick dip, but no feet connected with granite in that location. It's always nice to be there, always feels like home.

Yeah, i know what you mean Eddie. Good rock, good friend with a lot of common climbing history between you. Bob and I ( first climbed together 40 years ago) had many fine ascents this last extraordinary fall, through winter, and into spring season. Sometimes in brilliant sun and warmth, other times in cold wind with approaching snow.

The only element missing in your outing is the adventure of the unknown. I've got stacks of that lined up, much more than the relatively short extent of lifetime ahead of me. The offer still stands for this fall. Round up one of your buddies for easy going camaraderie and take the four hour drive out my way. I should be recovered as im going to get from the procedures on my hand by early fall. Can show you guys any flavor of new route you care to do, most of them high quality on great rock.
