great story and wonderful achievement James!
It will be interesting to see how your prose changes as you grow away from your self-deprecating style...

Excellent tale of perseverance and single-minded adherence to a personal goal without the expectation of reward other than the self-knowledge and deep satisfaction that comes with overcoming all the obstacles, all the hardships.
Congratulations.

"I filled one duffel bag with clothes and filled another bag with webbing. I had big plans to tear up the Valley, despite the fact that the extent of my climbing skills amounted to being able to rig a proper top-rope. No matter. I was going to set up top ropes on the big rocks.
I saw the Rostrum and thought I might have enough webbing. The bus passed Middle Cathedral and I thought I might need more webbing. I looked up at El Capitan and started cleaning rooms in the Yosemite Lodge two days later, to save money for all that webbing."
Toprope Warrior!
thanks for the read James. enjoy the next thing, whatever that might be. Sounds like you don't know yet.

Pretty cool, a writer and sufferer of the crushing want to be what I call
'Syfert' : famous for more than the current state of things, mediocrity.
'watch my smoke 'cause I'm gonna burn it up when I get to the 'Ditch'.
The levels and dedication to the art show that you are, the best and the baddest in a great game that other great athletes play for keeps too.
Good on you for this.
The self deprecating humor belies the accomplishments, which are, as you well know, Outstanding!
This then as many of us will all admit, that we are, or have all been in that self same, self made boat. spelled out as the every-man's dilemma, upon having reached the top of the heap, so to speak.being all in and well rewarded for perseverance. The eternal question of - Wow, now what?well I hope you share that what as perfectly as you have shared here.
This might have an actual Germanic definition? Sadly that is beyond me to quote.
