The orignal still seems to be there for me, per this link:

http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=2607318&tn=80

Let's see if my current car-camp post shows up?

It did not and I got kicked off-line on this thread.

Take 2.

I sought out the other (missing) thread a week ago to no avail. Good on Fritz.

Another dirt run is Schilling Road on Schilling Ridge north of Merced R. at Bagby, Mariposa Co. In several locations it's possible to view Half Dome with ease.

And on the way in to Pinoche Peak you hike along this old logging road, level and contouring perfectly. Ain't bulldozers great?

And over on the southern side of the S. Fork Merced River is the dirt extension of Jerseydale Road, leading out to a really poor vantage point, unfortunately.

Driving dirt roads is dangerous...if you meet a logging truck!

Mouse! Per your request for a shot of the Bugaboos road. I fail you.

However, here is my Chevy Nova & the parking lot in late Sept 1972, after the "dreaded Bugboo Lodge Griz" ripped open my ripped off UHaul luggage carrier while we were up in the Bugs. It ate the goodies, & scattered the rest. (We had a voracious mouse living in the car, so we had transfered everything of value to the luggage carrier.)

DMT, i think your first image, just above the engine nacelle, is looking from good hope mesa downstream past the tapestry cliffs to hall's creek bay. water is low enough there that the ferry service has been suspended between hall's crossing and bullfrog.

second image shows more of water pocket fold/grand gulch. the burr trail crawls out of there to the west, about where the relief allows.

in the distance is navajo mountain and across the gap to the north the eastern escarpment of the kaiparowits plateau, labeled fifty mile bench and the straight cliffs. welcome to (keyword) grand staircase ... should lead to some geologic cross sections to reveal the faulting.

DMT! Nice shots of the sweet spots! I would probably shy away from too too many distinct explanations, other than to say that the incredible tectonic stability of the CO Plateau predisposes the place to those fine erosional forms. Laramide-ish compression drove up the single finest string of domes of sedimentary rock that I intimately know. Also, the emplacement laccolithic mountain ranges, coupled with salt tectonism drive this fine place to be just what it is.

It has been so dry out there in the boonies that Bear Creek has not had any kind of flow in many-many months.

The recent rains have probably made it green, but there probably isn't much grass growing. I should go for a cruise with the Rev out that way when I'm more healthy, but I'm still a semi-invalid.

Hooblie nails it.

I should also have got a pic of the road from there down to the riverside campsite/trailhead. It was not in great shape. Just about had to put my 4Runner in 4Low to get back up.
But some guys in another 4Runner had managed to tow a good sized camping trailer down it. I was fairly impressed and they were going to have an adventurous time getting it back up.

rottingjohnny,

I drove my Courier p/u over Pendola Gardens Rd. back in the seventies. It's not that bad, but the drop-offs are pretty exciting. I'd recommend first gear, driving slow and riding low.

It's not very long. I drove it going north from Old Toll Rd. to Trabuco Gardens on Hwy. 49. Don't know what shape it's in now. Back then it was pretty reasonable.

I was driving in the Pine Nuts above Carson one evening, pretty lost, when I ran across a woman with a baby. Figured I was somehow on private property, so started to back up. She flagged me down, and I thought "uh oh"; but turns out she was stuck further up the road in...

a Subaru.

I gave her and the baby a ride home, right past the Subie in the mud. Was nowhere near anything up there, and without the proper gear in the rain over night? They would have died. My best good deed, I think. Still wonder about that gal and the baby.

You like dirt roads? Start in Riverside, Nevada and head SE into Arizona through St Thomas gap (with 30m side trip to Lake Mead crags) then east to Pakoon Springs (side trip 45 miles in Grand Wash) then thru Hidden Canyon still east and over Mount Trumball (side trip 12m south to the promontory) then east again to a mandatory 20m side trip to the most scenic spot in the Grand Canyon (Toroweap) then north and then northwest to the Hurricane Cliffs emerging in Utah.

You can do over 500 miles in 3 states without ever touching pavement.

I got a few more ranges for you guys , have you checked out or heard of the Slate or Argus ranges? They are the little brothers to the mighty Panamint range in Death Valley. The Argus makes up the other side of the Panamint valley, and the Slate is much smaller, and primarily known as being the range Manly and Rodgers had to cross when they escaped from Death Valley in 1849.

But they almost always empty (of people) and have a fair number of trails and mines , and history, to check out. Some good 4 wheelin too...

Having 4WD sometimes just means you get twice as stuck.

Some of the most experienced off roaders I know only use the 4WD for getting unstuck in order to turn around. Personally I think there are far more factors to consider. Conditions change, or sometimes there are alternate exits, etc.
Besides, it is always 49% vehicle and 51% driver.

I like this thread. I'll have to scan some of the BITD pics of the road into Gonzaga Bay before the graders (and now pavers) "fixed" it. What used to be a 12 hour drive is now just 1 1/2. It was wild and beautiful and I miss it dearly-. Kept out the riff raff.. and everyone else for that matter.

That road in Tanzania.. brambles for a 1000 miles.

Yeah, I have no problem using four wheel drive to go places; but when the chains go on it's turnaround time. For the most part, I'm relatively aware of what my truck can and can knot do. Snow is a little bit different in that it is often difficult to gauge just how deep it is, and especially what lies beneath. That is, I think, what cost me a transmission mount, sway bar bracket, rear yoke and u-joint on the last trip.

And yes, I am pretty determined to fill those tags. This being the first out of eight total that I haven't filled, I'm still way ahead of average. Though I will admit, this year's experience weighs heavily on my mind. I very much prefer the roads that are not blanketed in frozen water.

The most interesting road last summer was the fairly popular goat trail into Boulder Basin, Idaho. I beat my 4-Runner up it a couple miles, then we parked & hiked. I'm very glad, although a parade of ATV's & jacked-up 4wd's kept rolling by us.

Oh, man, no pictures to document it. :-(

But finally the Matrix met its match on the New Dixie Mine Road. Sand was the culprit, 4 miles in from nowhere.

OK, so the right front is buried up to the hub in sand, the left front is situated in the perfect rock formation so that the tire has a chock in the front and back, and the left rear tire is two feet in the air.

Efforts to dig out the right front and give it some traction were fruitless, it just kept digging in deeper, which kept raising the left rear even higher.

Managed to find a way to jack the left front and place flat rocks under the tire thus eliminating the chock effect. That did the trick.

We must have spent an hour getting out of there, and didn't think once of getting some pics.

Yes, I'm an idiot, no shovel, etc. But the Matrix had gotten us in to some pretty gnarly spots.

Anybody know where I can get a good Tacoma 4x4 cheap? Some guy at Carmax wants to sell me a 2006 for $24,000.

Older shots from 1983 & earlier.

If I had had a son, I may have named him Brautigan Lee Bermingham, a fine-sounding name. Unfortunately for him, I did not.
--MFM

In Confederate General from Big Sur, as in much of his work, Brautigan frequently alludes to classics of American literature. When Lee Mellon taps the gas lines of Pacific Gas and Electric, he is paralleling the actions of Ralph Ellison's unnamed protagonist in Invisible Man (1952). Mellon's impoverished encampment at Big Sur is in many ways a parodic revision of Thoreau at Walden Pond. References to earlier American literary rebels are spelled out in the novel: Mellon was raised in Ashville, North Carolina, the birthplace of Thomas Wolfe, and at one point in the novel Henry Miller is observed waiting outside his Big Sur home for the mail delivery.--from a short critique of Confederate General from Big Sur in Bookrags

I've been listening to this as I worked on this post and may keep it going till the tide runs the other way.

Bixby's Landing

They burned lime on the hill and dropped it down
here in an iron car
On a long cable; here the ships warped in
And took their loads from the engine, the water
is deep to the cliff. The car
Hangs half way over in the gape of the gorge,
Stationed like a north star above the peaks of
the redwoods, iron perch
For the little red hawks when they cease from
hovering
When they've struck prey; the spider's fling of a
cable rust-glued to the pulleys.
The laborers are gone, but what a good multitude
Is here in return: the rich-lichened rock, the
rose-tipped stone-crop, the constant
Ocean's voices, the cloud-lighted space.
The kilns are cold on the hill but here in the
rust of the broken boiler
Quick lizards lighten, and a rattle-snake flows
Down the cracked masonry, over the crumbled
fire-brick. In the rotting timbers
And roofless platforms all the free companies
Of windy grasses have root and make seed; wild
buckwheat blooms in the fat
Weather-slacked lime from the bursted barrels.
Two duckhawks darting in the sky of their cliff-hung
nest are the voice of the headland.
Wine-hearted solitude, our mother the wilderness,
Men's failures are often as beautiful as men's
triumphs, but your returnings
Are even more precious than your first presence.

TT! Re that little dead lodgepole pine across the road into Boundary Creek. The beetle-killed trees in Idaho are turning into a real problem, as they fall across backcountry roads & trails on Idaho.

Worse yet, bark beetles have killed a bunch of our high-altitude Limber & Whitebark pines, which can be much larger diameter trees than those skinny Lodgepole pines.

I am now traveling backcountry Idaho with a chainsaw.

some some decent road base might live on top.(of)it's a bootleg road on a neighboring parcel i just paid several years of back taxes on and only sees a couple passes a week since a much smoother alternative got put in a few years back, but some sportos
found it last week. a bar ditch should really help out since it's more of a basin than a watercourse

DMT! Them California roads yere posting seem suspeciously smooth & I marvel at them nice metal signs without any bullet holes in them.

In Idaho, the out of towners shoot up the backcountry road signs & the locals remove the signs, to keep the out of towners out.

I don't have a problem with that.

DMT! Does Chuck Yeager live on Chuck Yeager road? Some redneck must have a grudge against one of America's heroes.

I met him at a Jackson Wyoming "ONE-FlY" championship dinner around 1990. Heidi & I had helped out the folks from Jack Dennis Sports, who sponsored the big fly fishing event, where contestants were limited to one & only one fly for their day of drift-boat fishing on the Snake River.

If a contestant lost the fly, they were out of the contest.

Chuck Yeager was on one of the celebrity fly-fishing teams. He was polite to me, but reverted to his test-pilot legacy & spent the evening doing his best to flirt with & impress Heidi.

She was amused, and I wasn't especially bothered.

This high mountain Idaho road wasn't showing much dirt after the hailstorm. I saw the storm coming from 10 miles downcanyon & thinking it might take out the fragile road over a high pass, I gunned my SUV up the road. Luckily the worst of the hail had passed by the time I got to that zone.

And yes, the storm did take out the road behind me.

Nope, VERY early production VW Golf/Rabbit. Still slow by any means. By looking at the pic near the license plate area you can see it's what they call a "swallowtail" which makes it a 74/75 build car.

@Jamesthomsen, what tires are your sporting on the Sprinter? Is it 4x4?

255/85/R16 looks good to me, seen a few folks doing them, but not supported by Mercedes and not clear how whacked the ESP safety features would be by 33" vs 30.5" tires.

after a substantial lunch at the ponderosa lodge i bonked hard in the mid afternoon, so threw down in this
shady spot for a nap. the skeets came out before sunset. still groggy, i deployed the tent and slept on ...

unlike alaskan mosquitos, confronted with netting these guys vanished rather than pile up on the mesh.
none to be seen as i broke camp around 2am. the crickets & crawly things however were going bananas.
i counted fifteen daddy long legs under headlamp just during the PETA approved rolling of the gear.

such timing made for a laid back, very pleasant topdown & tuneful descent to the foothills,
then some aromatic zig/zaggin' under the stars and across the ag lands to middle earth.

upon entering the inner sanctum, i was offered the sole upholstered chair of honor and promptly
executed a partial lateral dismemberment of the left armrest and the associated legs. and then,
as soon as my short term memory would allow, i mostly finished the job getting to my feet.

... sorry mouse

I am so going to miss this driveway.

I tried to explain to the elk the impending fusillade of drunkenly-launched metal projectiles. I bugled back, snuffed and snorted, challenging the bull in front of his harem; he and his favorite female sauntered off into the meadow. 12 hours later the first gunblast sounded. Good luck, elks.

at some point in my climbing career it dawned on me that without gobs of orange on my getup, or ballistics in my bag,
i could neither forestall assault nor return fire should i happen to make a cameo appearance in the crosshairs of an eager sportsman.

it might have been the day we played peekaboo with a couple of curious goats high in the montana crags.
when we returned to the approach vehicle we had left in the wide spot where the peaks shined above,
a posse of goat hunters was assembled there. the interrogation began with "seen any ... GOATS???"

our rapid response in a convincing chorus of three: "NO!"
it was a proud moment of unanimity in dirtbaggery

^^^ On a run above ABQ I saw two camo clad bow hunters exiting the city limits just as I was. I proceeded uphill considerably faster than them and, if I do say so, I did a credible job of shooing a number of deer further uphill. WOOT!

I've always had an abiding hatred for "goat-heads," those creeping, sneaky vines whose caltrop-shaped burrs embed themselves in your bike tires, find their way in to the floor mats of your vehicle, and cost you time by having to remove them from the soles of your shoes.

Dingus,

yes, I will reveal the location down the road(so to speak!) One more hint, this time of year it is a great place to ride bikes though most people come here to ride on the paved roads. I am the only person I know who has ridden this road (and a road bike no less). Of the four maps I had this road only showed up on one of them.

Actually, it is the Canary Islands and the southern end of Gran Canaria to be exact. The islands are volcanic which makes for some interesting terrain.

The area is very popular with road cyclists as there are some big, paved climbs up to 6500'(top of the island). I explored some of the dirt roads as well which were pretty sketchy and not just because they weren't very well documented on any maps. When you slice a tire and are miles from nowhere that when the fun really begins!

thanks gnome ... TBailey, key to the issue is: the first picture always loads up properly after clicking "done" but the built in flaw is that the blinking cursor appears right in the middle of the "square brackets" containing the photoid=xxxxxx string. one must click outside the brackets to move the cursor to the right or any subsequent image tags will be nested ... they should appear in serial order like: [photoid=xxxxxx][photoid=yyyyyy]

Nice dirt road shots folks. I found lots of scenic dirt roads in northern Nevada last week, while searching for minerals of interest.

Ruby Range dirt.

Galena ghost town dirt.

Burned up old truck dirt.

The truck was just below a ranch near Mountain City & may have been a cherished antique before the fire.

Funny story.

This was supposed to be the road to Defense Mine in the Panamint Valley. My buddy had the gpx plot all mapped out on his iPad. The trails rated as difficult so we figured it would be a fun time for some fully built rigs.

After about 1/2 mile we get to the section I posted. It's difficult for sure. We go another 2 miles up this wash, past 5 really hard obstacles, and the wash just stops. It pretty much becomes a goat path up a very narrow ravine.

WTF? My buddy looks at his iPad and starts to laugh. About 2 1/4 miles back is a turn to the right we missed that actually takes you up to Defense Mine. We ended up in the drainage south of it. Best mistake we could have made because the actual Defense Mine trail was easy for our rigs.

We turned around and headed back up to Defense Mine. The correct way. lol

Here's a shot of a quick recovery on the way out of the wash. My rig made it up this waterfall no problem. Coming down I was going super slow. About a foot before my front wheels hit the ground my truck just slid like it was suddenly kicked into neutral. That ended up with me firmly planted but unable to move.

I couldn't go forward or reverse. The engine would rev but the tranny wouldn't engage. I thought for sure it was just a snapped linkage but when I got out the check the linkage was fine. I got a quick tug back to level ground and my rig drove just fine.

Turns out the transmission pickup line is in the back of the trans. That angle I was on was just enough to push all the fluid forward and starve the transmission. So next weeks project is to pull the pan and move the pickup to the center. lol

In the years I've owned my ranch the hairest drive out was in 3' of fresh powder that was coming over the hood blinding me a fraction of a second after the wiper passed.

A week ago we had a warm storm that put over an inch of rain onto the 2' of accumulated snow.

I had driven south that day and the rain got my 4x4 cleaner than its been in years.

But then I went to the ranch on Friday,..

The ground was a bog!
Sinking to the axles I kept going into and out of opposite lock. As a result I hit the worst holes I normally avoid but, fearful of losing momentum, I just kept at it trying not to spin my wheels and get buried.

When I got out my 4x4 was unrecognizable.
Nobody could guess the make.

I went to the carwash and pumped quarters.

When I was nearly clean I left.
Several hundred pounds of mud remained undrained,..
