You don't need a mechanical engineer for that.

You need a machinist.

(they really know how to make things, not just draw pictures of things that won't work)

it's a pretty tough project with lots of small pieces requiring tight tolerances. i figured a ME would be right for that but I'll noodle around and see if I can procure a machinist. thanks a lot

Sounds like what you are looking for is a medium size, short run, repair parts duplication oriented, machine shop with a good metrology setup and laser scanner/surface table.

They are out there.

Southwest Pattern Works in Albuquerque NM does exactly this stuff. The owner John Groth is a climber and he has a young ME with an aerospace background and solid 3D CAD skills.
