Hey Avery, your pics got me thinking. I climbed with a number of NZ climbers over the years. A second wave came and used my home as a Valley base camp in the late 80's. Lionel Clay, Pete a doctor, John and Susie, Paula. Wonder if you run into or heard of them. Paula a nurse is still in Christchurch I know Susie got way into Mountain bike racing and her and John run outdoor classes somewhere. Anyway, a long shot.

Hey Marty, I know of Lionel Clay (I've never met him). The doctor you mentioned may be Dave Fearnley. I've spoken to Dave a few times via Facebook. As for the others: I don't know, Sorry.

Cheers!

Beautiful looking limestone Avery. How tall do the cliffs get around that area?

Hey Mike, They probably average at around 50 to 80ft, with some well over 100ft. That's an educated guess, I haven't been to Castle Hill for 23 years!

Looking good Avery! Keep it up. I will remember John Dale fondly all my life. Super fun, tough, solid partner on the Pacific Ocean Wall with Bob Williams and I. It was an important time for all of us in 1980, and the only big wall we did together.

RIP Bob.

Coming up on bouldering season at Castle Hill now too. We went in the summer and it was too warm to stick.

All the moderate climbs are super smooth now. I can barely send down climbs. I guess that's the downside of limestone. It really is not a very hard rock and it gets polished really easily. Add to that the fact that almost everything has rounded holds and I hardly get off the ground there.

That's interesting Phil_B. Even back in my day (80's, Early 90's) things were getting pretty slippery. Does Castle Hill still have that unique beauty that I loved all those years ago? I sure hope so.

Your welcome to post any NZ Rock Climbing pics you may have.
