Toyota, Nissan and other manufacturers sell cheaper UV's in other countries. Too bad you can't get them here.
Of course you can't get them here.
America only sells smart cars because we're too stooopid to drive a simple car ..... :-)

We had a 2000 rav 4, it was a decent car but it's important to realize that is what they are, a unibody car with AWD. As I recall fwy mileage was ~25, mixed city 20. I really didn't find it significantly more capable than a front wheel drive or rear wheel drive car with winter tires.
If you want a vehicle that has more room than your typical compact sedan and has the ground clearance for off road jaunts, then you should really consider a true SUV i.e. 4-runner, or a pickup.
Think of it as a sedan that has a hatchback instead of a trunk.
IMHO a better option would be a wagon where you can drop the rear seats and have somewhat reasonable sleeping room.

Men are pretty much doomed: everything's either a girl's car or overcompensation.
Fwiw, I'm proud to drive a girl's car (and my wife's happy about it, too ;) ).

I'm still laughing at the DMT/Lady Scarlett thing. Youse guys crack me up!
LS -look at these 3, Rav4, Honda CRV, Suburu Forester. Pick the one that makes you happy and you'll be good to go. I've done that very thing twice, last one was CRV, this one the Subby. I once brought 5 guys and all our gear back from Yos in the CRV. The Subby will carry 3 and their crap MAX. I'm getting 29 mpg on it (last weekend, just me and a haul bag) But it compensates for the lack of cargo space in other respects and I've been happy with it.

There are no good Awd wagons imo
Wrong
Handles like the finest of sedans, uber smooth ride so you can drive for hours w/o fatique and kick the rear seats down and there is plenty of room for two to sleep.

Just got an outback and am loving it so far. Good gas mileage (32hwy, 26city, 28-29mixed), full time AWD, 8.7in clearance, and will sleep 2 6' people comfortably in back with seats folded down. Forrester was not as nice inside and not as comfy to slep in.

There are many things not to like about Mercedes, but IMHO nobody builds a wagon with better ride quality and the 4matics are quite capable on snow and ice. There is something to be said for driving 4-5 hours and arriving at your location w/o fatique or cricks in your back.

Still haven't had a chance to lay (lie?) down in the back of my CRV, but fwiw I'm 6', have the driver's seat raised all the way, and still have at least 4" of air between my head and the roof.

My father had one.
He got hit on a lot by gay men when he drove it.
He sold it and bought a truck.
True story.

DMT, I guess we have different reading comprehension. My first take was
that his dad got hit on a parking lot by gay men. I didn't think they
drive too badly, usually. I couldn't figger out what the Rav4 had to do
with that. And I do own a pink shirt but I'm careful where I wear it;
Pinedale, WY I figger I'm good to wear it.

I'm touched by yer concern for my well-being! But as I told the 'nice'
Canadian Immigration officer, who seemed to think I was trying to sneak in
to stay, "Look, I'm ONLY here to see the damned in-laws, OK? If you want
to send me back to Chicago then we'll both be happy."

this deserves some penalty slack fer SURE!!!!
just you wait...!
Oh man...this is what I get for being busy at work!
BTW, Raves can be cool, but I'll say that when I recently went to a backwoods climber gathering, I didn't see ANY RAV4s.
It makes me think that Real Climbers get burlier vehicles...
Cheers!

Go check out a few for sale. Drive them around. Ask the owner to fold down the rear seats and lie down in the back with you. To see if you fit comfortably. Then decide.

Asking $6k
It's got an NRA sticker, so I'm good, in Wyo! Perhaps limited in California and Colorado....
