Mine died a slow death getting weaker and weaker over a period of 3 days before expiring.

Lived a life of 27 months.

I don't want to blame The Flames, but it appears to have resulted from overheating.

I'm thinking of turning it (the replacement) off at night when not in use.

Yeah or Nay?

Netgear is pure crap and garbage. Consumer grade sh!t.

I use Mikrotik Routerboard and Ubiquiti gear.

Mikrotik routerboard gear is premium quality but requires networking knowledge to configure in routeros setup.

Although they have Quickset now which helps for n00bs.

My routerboards run 24/7 for years without ever turning them off ......

Check to see if your power supply wall wart is the culprit.

It might not be your router at all and just the wall wart power supply that went south.

Those small black switch mode supplies die easily because they use cheap crappy Chinese components.

You can get cheap replacements on ebay.

Just make sure the polarity on the plug is correct/and right size along with the right voltage/current capability .....

Thanks again. As I've said before, you're a good man (or did you say that? and in honor of the missing Doc Hartouni, maybe we both said it).

Anyway, the power is ok. It's the box itself. They do keep coming down in price though. On the other hand one of my computers is an old-ass thing running XP-SP3 flawlessly.

Am I getting lazy, I guess so, ever since starting to pick up that whopping big Social Security check each month.

Obama, who cares, I got the "real" deal 'Medi".

Try this -

"DD-WRT is free Linux-based firmware for several wireless routers, most notably the Linksys WRT54G (including the WRT54GL and WRT54GS)"

Stay away from these old obsolete routers.

DD-WRT is not that great either, as I've had experience porting DD-WRT also it cost money and is not free.

There are products that are worse than Netgear (e.g. Belkin - their wire did seem to work well in the old days).

It's funny how I made it through 67 years of life without the ability to get onto a computer at the dinner table. I'd just walk upstairs into the "computer room" and use a hard connection.

It is a lot cheaper than getting into your car and driving to the scene of the crimes, however, like I used to do when trouble-shooting was done on a 300 Baud modem (anybody know what that is?).

You can get business class modem for ATT dsl.

Netopia Model 3347-02 Annex is what I use.

Netopia was bought out by Motorola.

You can get the netopia 3347 on eBay cheap.

Look, you guys can talk all you want, but we need to know which router is the "Editor's Choice" and which is the "Top Pick".

Is this an ST Gear Review or isn't it?

That's a good point Ghost. However, since none of us is selling any particular one, it makes the task much harder.

I would incline toward Herr Braun's offering though, based upon an apparent MTBF of infinity. He did not mention pricing, which could factor in.

In my sample (n=1 or possibly two) the Netgear gear failed miserably and had a cost of about $3.50 a month and declining. I'd probably buy stock in a company that earned(cost) $3.50 forever.

caveat emptor

First type of computer system I saw heat issues with. That's about 100MB disc pack there. Not GB.

We'd call the Data General hardware guy (in the old days there were hard and soft guys) and he'd run diags. No problem. Leave 1/2 hour later problems recurred. On his third trip out, I suggested heasting the drive with a hair dryer. Disc failed. He replaced component. Problem never recurrd.

Moral: keep a good head and always carry a hair dryer

Well here it is. Nothing unusual in cursory examination (like e.g. the bulging capacitors that so frequently appear in Samsung LED tv's).

These have been dis-assembled before apparently.
