Poetry meters matter,
Mouse began to natter.
These are located in the alley,
and not in Yosemite Valley.

Barking away at the Beetles
(With edits)

Oh those mighty St Bernard's
They're the crown of the west
With Kings Jawbone and Drool-equoia
And Paw-semite are the best

Towering o'er the Valley
Is monolithic Wolf Capitan
Across from the Fur-thedrals
Climb them if you can

Half Bone and Mt Star Dog Chow
Are so beautiful in snow
Kibble Domes in the high Country
Is where you ought to go

Down the Sniff-ific Crust Trail
You will finally smell
Majestic Mount Whiffney
It's so beautiful, do tell

Them mighty St Bernard's
They're the crown of the west
And so doggone delicious
I must wagg-ingly confess

Speakin' of renaming, I jumped out of a plane exactly once here. I don't think that warranted calling the place Brown Field.

Maybe it should be Juniperro International?

Why?

Luckily (for me) this wasn't my trip.

It's been years since I cut myself off from most any form of music but the classical genre.

When Mama Liz passed I spent many-many evenings alone reading gems I borrowed from the used bookstore while listening to music which was also used.

It was an experience that broadened my awareness, a lot like the experience of learning to climb.

It was intense: there were new things to take in, to study, to master, and for which to learn appreciation.

Prior to this time I had been exposed to classical works only when working in the Telegraph shop of The North Face, where the ambient sound was an FM broadcast from one of the classical stations there in the Bay Area and that was it, no one changed the dial ever. We just wanted to show some class for the UC crowd, of course.

In the days when I ran TNF's seconds store, the music I played was mostly KFAT from Santa Cruz, not remotely classically-oriented, but more folksy and country and rocky and such.

But through both marriages, I never bothered to listen to classical at home...too much got in the way of simply relaxing. Build a couch, go fishing, see relatives, plan stuff, even go climbing...these were the activities which held me back from learning about classical.

All that pretty much stopped and the music helped fill the void, probably for about ten years. I even started listening to the occasional opera on Friday nights and then on Saturdays there was the Met's broadcast.

It's midnight in this oasis and the temp's up because I got tired of fighting the cold and not using the heater out of sheer cheapiosity. I was bundled up snugly in a concrete tomb most of the day, dozing & sleeping & napping with Shuteye Ridge out there in the distance, itself cozily wrapped in its blanket of new snow.

I am a hivernant humanoid in a nest of wool blended with acrylic, topped off by a sleeping bag given me by Fish Finder. If I wanted, there's an electric throw my sis gave me, but it's not my style and it costs money I don't have to run the thing. Sorry, lennypenny. Slippers would have been a better gift.

And speaking of slippers...the means-well management of the building has posted in the elevator a notice that all residents are requested not to wear their sleeping attire, including jammies, peignoirs, bedroom slippers, robes, dressing gowns, and bare feet when collecting their mail or visiting the office or sitting in the lobby or standing outside.

I can live with that, but that's only because I don't have bedroom slippers. Nor a bathrobe. a dressing gown, a peignoir, nor lingerie. Not even jammies. I like the feel of a wool blanket on my bare skin--it stimulates circulation and warms me up. I sleep naked. Usually always have.

I have an old pair of moccasins with soles for free from my brother-in-law (Thanks, Ed) that pass the dress code. Rubber flip-flops are apparently not on the list, also.

I threw out the old Adidas my dad handed down to me twenty-five years ago. Bullwinkle broke the news to me that my feet were painful to smell, and I figured the tennies were the culprit, having been soaked in river water so much, probably, compounding any of my naturally-produced bromidrosis. (Thanks, Dean.)

So I'm going to do my humble part to help make this old pile with the flaking exterior paint and the old-fashioned electrical sockets and the unreliable hot water and the roaches and the leaky basement (what the sandbags they put out were for) so that it can at least appear to be "classy" and "upscale" while everyone really knows the truth, including Mr. Jones.

Anyway, guys, we need more classical choices here, from time to time.

Where's Gnome gone? He hasn't posted and it's noticeable.

They refuse to play classical music in the lobby here, playing oldies and other muzakian treats, which are all from CDs given them by relatives of some guy that died in the building.

When My Ears Have Ears

My baby loves the rock n' roll
While I prefer the classical
She cranks it to the maximal
While I can take the minimal

We love opera and an occasional go
Dig those standards and old jazz you know
That Peruvian Andes flute can grow
Your heart to twice its size, and oh
Such tears of joy that we have known
As seed of music's love were sewn

So play that Bach or Mozart, love
Or thrill me with Rachmaninov
If loving classical were my only sin
I'd take Bernstein and his violins
But on rap and pop I'll take a pass
That kind of vibe just gives me gas

To each his own their need is had
But I love music when I'm sad
Or feeling anything at best
Even some bluegrass takes the test
And puts me in a lively mood
Whatever makes us happy, dude

A cello and it's mournful noise
Transcending sound to art with poise
Is what classical has been all about
For this hard of hearing old dolt, no doubt
