However, a few years before I retired from climbing I would hike up the trail for about a mile to a 50 ft cliff that ran uphill, allowing me to work on a hard rising traverse for about 40 feet where I was never over two feet from the ground!

Yeah, I read that, too.

It's like dancing on the edge of the abyss in your head.

You are still ten feet from the finish.

You are very exposed and the weather's closing.

So you rush it and your crimped left hand gives.

The ground rushes up at you and the tears form at the corners of your eyes.

And while you try to blink them away you land easily
and step back with both feet solidly planted in the pine needles.

Then reality kicks in.

No horrible SPLATTER or mushy-bones.

No grieving widow.

Just the knowledge that you have to give it another honest go.

Time for a swallow of water and a caramel Clif Bar.

I had a traverse that climbed an'eosed' 'decaying' crack to a plate of sttuco spray-Crete
**//THESE ARE CLOSER & EASIER & MORE CHOSSY THAN THE COMPACT SHORT HIGHER QUALITY SPECTACULAR, SHORT ROCK, 1Used by railroad crews when the NJ Department of transportation did a sub-standard job.You climbed the seam of the joint in the two tiered cement face 1900s' block bridge abutment.
Then at 10 to 12 solid crumbly the reach to the pasted flake tips the patch was strangely
Shaped like Texas, but I liked jgill's Ripper' traverse. [photoi=471229] From the six moves across the tips edge,
There was a stab into a two finger pocket, that I matched in to set for a step to the finger traverse , and then a stand back to the now secure crack. A bit of the old circuit remains there is as beautiful bridge or two and the Susquehanna Viaduct, All dead vertical edge to seams fright feasts. From ten to fifty feet.

Saving up beers for tomorrow night.
And then again also I might break into one tonight.
I have three, if I can can a fourth I'll have for cans.
I respect the luck of the need, that four would make a party three
A break and two for saving to get at least four together.
Unless I get thirsty, like now.

Food for thought: You guys should probably stop taking pictures of kids. Creep factor 10.

Russ, taking that under advisement.

I happen to know the lady who ran the little squirts through the cafe and told her I'd send her the good shots. She was totally cool.

I have run into mothers that seem to be over-protective, but learned that you cannot be protective enough of your kids.

Thanks for your concern, bro.

We must all look in our hearts and ask for the best guidance when dealing with this sort of delicate issue.

I'd like to put this out there, while we have this subject on the table.

Is it less creepy for a woman, say, to post pics of youngsters, than a man?

Please consider this rhetorical question as homework.

[Yes, folks, we can be serious when it's called for.]

What is creepy is old guys waltzing around with a camera and taking pictures of kids that are not theirs. In some parts that will get your camera stuffed up your a*# no questions asked.

That is the statement I am making. Take it as you will.

Brook, Sasha's a great little kid. You're a great little dad.

My own great big little kid went to Montessori. It pays off.

Russ' advice is, sadly, worth noting in this day and age, particularly from a legal perspective.

Helicopter Nation

From the earliest days
of Whirlybirds
when The Big Picture
framed us as the Men of Mars
on black & white TV screens
of a Saturday morning.

On through nightmares
of Rambos raining death
on those less fortunate
from on high
and telling us
how not to lead women & children
as we lead men
if we want to get some.

Then came the Sands of Iran
and how we ran
Northwards
but still holding on to our ray guns
and playing Chuck Norris.

And the Bird climbed on
while Rambo hung on a cliff
& our Bev took her last chopper ride.
