Stump outside the restrooms at the Visitors Center.
Millions have parked it here waiting for the cleaning staff to finish up in there.
And waiting.

And then the mad dash down the mall to Degnan's to use their facilities instead.

Bridalveil meadow.

Out of the old, the new comes fourth, following the brand new, the new improved, and the very latest.

Yeah, Gnome, it gets harder every day getting older is its own reward
but some get sick and some die and it never never ends until we ourselves do.

Life is loss when the chips are counted and the dealing's done
as the game is fixed from the outset but we all must play as if there were winners.

I've called and left a message for CC.
That's about all I can do 'cept to keep him in my prayers.

Yesterday. All my problems seemed so far away.

Today. Now it appears they've come to stay.

Yesterday Eleanor Rigby. Today, Joyce Carol Vincent.

I wish my problems were Hardly Visible.
And Kevin's an all right dude, much better company than a no-SEE-um.

True Grit

It's not about gritstone
but there are lots of places
where it was filmed that
we climbers frequent:

HOT Creek, Mono County, CA
Ouray, CO
Sherwin Summit, on Hwy 395
Gunnison, CO

The man called Moon
died in an outlaw dugout cabin
on the banks of one of the finest
trout-fishing streams in the state.
He died with a knife in his guts
just like a fish,
caught and cuffed,
then released into the cosmos.

When fishing on HOT Creek
I have used worms only,
flagrant in my outlawry,
risking the license I did not possess.
Finding the fish I landed
had swallowed the worm
(sacrifice accepted, thank you)
and was gonna die,
I bounced his head on a rock
and finished the murder.

Getting back to Jeff's place
at Tom's Place, where I holed up,
I cooked the trout in a large cast iron skillet
loaded with butter and herbs
and had the WORST piscatory dining
I have ever experienced.

There is a good reason in itself
for not taking fish from Hot Creek.
Their flesh tastes like sulfur,
or brimstone,
and these trout are best left for the ospreys
and the legal fly-fishermen.

I'd suggest a Hopper pattern
of some kind.

There was much to recommend in True Grit.

The scenery around Bishop was great. I think I recognized some sage patches over near Sherwin Summit, but not sure...it could've be a million places, I realize.

At the tail end just before the credits is a thank you from the producers to the various federal agencies whose cooperation...etc.

There was one shot of the stunt guy for Duke lowering into the pit to save Mattie Ross. He's obviously doing it with some sort of rapping device which is hidden from view. It is a shot from the back.

Knowing that the area around Ft. Smith and the Winding Stair mountains aren't full of snow-capped peaks or even sage brush is kind of off-putting, but most movie-goers don't care.

Thanks for the photos, zBrown, and the trivia.

Filming took place mainly in Ouray County, Colorado, in the vicinity of Ridgway (now the home of the True Grit Cafe), around the town of Montrose (Montrose County), and the town of Ouray.[2][3][4] (The script maintains the novel's references to place names in Arkansas and Oklahoma, in dramatic contrast to the Colorado topography.) The courtroom scenes were filmed at Ouray County Courthouse in Ouray.[5][6]--Wiki quote
A big rip-roaring welcome home from 'stan, big Jim!

This next bit was 1st seen on the thread, "Mike Kosterlitz - climber and Nobel prize winner"
The comments from posters of notability if not nobility on that thread,
humbled me from leaving my bitchy whine there.

a guy I wish I'd never met another carp woot boy also named Sloan,
who while a climber, mathematician and Bell Labs employee saw fit to re-write history.
I climbed circles around the Nj Guide book author. For years we climbed together,
when I didn't want to puke from climbing with J Gruenberg, J Meleski, M Freeman, etal.
I'm the one Who climbed hard in northern jersey] and will take every opportunity to point out that I also climbed where
Al Rubin climbed at the same time and certainly also some before
me._

After stopping to read why Avery thinks that we here as a tribe can disuede suicide,
I came to say that it is not within my wheel-house.
It is my Ken to totally spout off on anything .
The suicide it is not something I'm gonna share with a serial deleter.
Sorry but I've been burnt by tha before.
Avery if you. Are no longer a climber and life is not worth living.
Give up. Let go you'll fall and more than likely survive.
The need to struggle on is the penance we must pay if we are to arrive
We all die eventually.
Please, if your in a hurry take the time to lock down what it
is that you think is in the way of your continued living.

I think I wore out all my Alison Krauss CDs.
Bluegrass and a beautiful voice, what's not to like?

My old Dog #164

Got an old dog
Can't see outta one eye
Blind in the other
Can't find my cat
She's been missing now
For a year, oh brother

What am I gonna do
The internet said
The world is through
I'm stuck here in limbo
Without my shot
For autonomy flue?

I'm long in the tooth
Been short on sleep
And have holes in my sox
But I ain't complainin'
Cuz my mind is frozen
In a popcycle box

So I'm goin' fishing
On the southern coast
For a two headed starfish
Or I might bring in
My limit in kelp
Hope springs eternal, I wish
