It's a honey trap, Craig.

You're dead meat. :0)

You're cacti are so beautifully photographed...please post some up here anytime.

This is the anything goes thread, buddy.

Just don't go on about religion vs. science here, please. Or guns.

We love explosions, though.

And cool cars.

Climbing is, of course, on topic at all times.

It's just that we Flames regulars are, for the most part, out of the climbing game now, though I still entertain pretensions and fantasies about the sport of dings.

We venerate Bob Dylan, denigrate St. Junipero Serra, and play way too much Grateful Dead for our own good.

And we abide Farouk now. He's totally cool with me now. He's like when I first heard Rap--that's some scary, freaky shtuff but I got used to it and now I like hip-hop on occasion.

I hope that begins to answer your question.

Mouse

I need to ask the expert, as this occurred to me the other day. Is it acceptable to refer to more than one cactus as cactuses? Or is cacti deemed acceptable in the world of spines and needles?

Most of us use "cactuses"

cacti sounds to prickly.

All-Nighter

The dark falls away on the horizon
But the garbage men never see it.
Their world of deep office canyons
And dumpsters galore is well-lit
By an army of light standards,
Each one armed with a small sun,
Each one emitting a faint buzzing sound,
Each buzz having its own tone,
Each mini-sun an efficient if messy
Mass murderer of moths.
Their carcasses litter the sidewalk.
They crunch underfoot as the workers
Collect the refused containers of uneaten food
The paper from a thousand offices
Like the one hundreds of feet above,
Where a young man sits at his desk.
He wads up some papers filled with his ideas
And tosses them into the round file.
Watching the sunrise out over the bay,
Leaning back in his plush office chair,
Running his fingers through his hair,
This on-the-way-up young buck
Sits contemplating the new day,
His immediate future with this company,
His own plans for that future, and sighs,
Wondering what those garbage men take home.

The Oak Tree

The oak tree despaired every fall
His leaves would turn from green to brown
The maple's leaves of brilliant crimson
Stood out proudly on the hill
Which to all the birds was such a thrill
But the oak tree only felt a chill

While most trees turned bright orange or gold
The oak fell into the doldrums
Then as autumn turned to wintery cold
The leaves all fell and one by one
The trees lost all their luster
And looked the same 'till winter was done

With spring the world became alive
And the oak's new leaves were full and green
But as he reveled in his vitality
He sensed that something was amiss
Something lurking and unseen
As lurk it did in it's causality

And when summer came the oak tree's leaves
Laden by aphid's excreta
Drooped in the long hot summer's eve
As the moon came up a glowering
Above the forest where the river ran
And an ancient schloss stood towering

As autumn returned the oak took long naps
Sometimes he slept for days on end
But with thundering booms as branches cracked
One day he awoke to the woodsman's cries
But only despaired that his leaves had waxed brown
As trees all about were laid down by the ax

He had never cared nor had he known
Of the industry of the lives of men
In the village nearby where they lived and worked
Where they milled their lumber for their homes
But there in the forest he wasn't alone
Surrounded by stumps and their mournful moans

The men built coffins and buried their dead
They buried them deep in the woods on the hill
Under the roots of a mighty elm
In the cemetery where the gypsy did go
And she cursed them for their ill deeds and sins
That no peace would ever their spirits know

In the wood lot out by the old saw mill
All the wooden stakes were bundled in rows
For the bracing of saplings in the orchard row
Though some were used by the village mob
To thrust to the hearts of the undead when
Nosferatu's army would rise again

The oak tree despaired alone each fall
His leaves had turned from green to brown
And the stumps nearby reminded him
Of brilliant fall colors of days gone by
Which to all the birds was such a thrill
Now the oak tree only felt a chill
